Our quest for a new bike has ended with Maxwell and Sara-Kate’s suggestion of the Trek Allant WSD – yay! It’s affordable, well designed and looks good to boot. It also makes it Bike #4 for us (#6 if you include the BF’s bikes). Does that seem like a lot to you?
Well it does to us, but it’s easy to collect a lot of bikes: we have the new bike (a hybrid), a vintage cruiser, a folding bike and a mountain bike, and the BF has a vintage road bike and a mountain bike. In our group of friends that’s normal, if not on the low side.
We’re lucky to have a bike storage room in our building, but bikes take up a lot space, and we’re thinking a couple have to go… The new Trek was actually purchased in hopes of consolidating the collection.
What do you do with your bikes and how did you end up with so many?

I've got a road bike for long rides/triathlon training and a hybrid I use for commuting. I've been toying with the idea of a third bike dedicated to winter commuting, but want to do a lot more research before taking that plunge.
The way I see it, everyone needs at least three bikes: a mountain bike (for long rides), a road bike (for trail riding) and a cruiser (for looking cute). I also have a single-speed for commuting to work--I love the simplicity of no gears and a single brake. It's also nice during goathead season to be able to grab another bike if you're heading out and find that main ride has a flat (and then another if that bike is troubled, too).
(And lest this seem excessive and not very green, I'll add that two bikes were bought used, one was free, and one came from a thrift store. Oh, and I don't have a car.)
between myself and my boyfriend we have three bikes. he has a road for longer rides plus a daily rider (commuter bike) and I have a road bike for everything. eventually I would like to get a fixed gear for commuting. I won't have such a need to have a multiple speed bike for riding about town since portland is so much flatter than san francisco. but to be honest, it's hard not to want to collect as bikes are so awesome.
My family of four has four bikes: a hybrid that my husband rides to and from work, a cruiser that i use for running errands and general tooling around, and two kids' bikes for our daughters.
We'll soon be increasing that number to add a road bike for my husband who's training for a triathlon.
We are also thinking about getting a tandem for longer rides with our kids.
