They say you spend one-third of your life in bed. We definitely spend way more time than that. In fact, we're in bed as we write this. We spend a lot of time in bed. We blog from it, we sleep in it of course, we often eat breakfast in it, sometimes dinner, it's where we take naps, talk on the phone and of course, there's...well...er...other stuff. The room itself invites hanging out: we've got a great mattress, it's painted the perfect cool shade of blue-grey and the curtains diffuse the light just enough during the day. What about you? How much time do you spend in bed? Survey after the jump...

I spent a lot more time in bed when I was growing up, because my room was the only space that was "mine," and my bed was the only place to sit other than my desk chair. Now, I'm pretty much only there when I go to bed -- the couch is just as comfortable and that's where the TV is. ;)
I do very much love spending time in bed. Cuddling with my dog (yes, I'm one of those pet owners), reading, writing, sketching, watching movies on my laptop (I'm adamant about no TV in the bedroom though). Sometimes I even work from bed.
I live in a small 2 BR house with one extended common room and a roommate in the other bedroom, so my bedroom is sometimes the only private space I have.
It's really a sanctuary for me and looks out into a very quiet and private backyard with a big bamboo plant right outside the window.
I think working from bed gets old after a while. If you live with roommates, then your room is pretty much your only private space, but when you have a whole house, why? I'd rather have my bed (and bedroom, for that matter) be a sanctuary, dedicated to my non-work life.
when i was younger and lived with parents or roomates i did everything in my bed... because it took up about half of my bedroom... and like stegersaurus said it was my space.
now im really only in my bedroom when im going to bed or getting ready. which is why its such a neglected space of ours. we do everything in the living room or kitchen/dining room. i would love for our bedroom to be a space we used more to relax. but we have a 1 year old... so theres not much relaxing going on!
As a problem sleeper for most of my adult life, one of the "rules" I've always been advised is "your bed should be for sleeping and sex." So when I know I need a nap, I retire there to have functional sleep, and usually set an alarm (otherwise I'd sleep for hours - my body just does that - and I won't sleep at night). I try to keep general lounging on the couch (it's comfy!) so as not to blur the lines of what my bedroom is for. The exception is that in a one bedroom/small office condo, there is no real place to "go far away" when my wife and I need quiet or space. So the bedroom sometimes becomes that far-away spot (at the other end of the unit). For me, this rule eliminates the blurred lines that allow me to eat, web-surf, veg, doze, and otherwise live in my bed - I've done that and it kicks me into a less-functional lifestyle.
We are 19 year old, and sleep on a futon that is right in front of the tv in our tiny studio...so we're in bed all the time.
P.S... don't get me wrong, however, and think that my delicious Tempurpedic doesn't call my name at all hours of the day...
My futon is comfortable enough for sleeping, but it's not very cozy so I only use it when I'm asleep. When I had a regular mattress, though, I spent a ton of time in bed.
A lot less than I used to and than I would like. When I was younger (teenager/early 20's), I would be in bed nearly all the time whether it was to sleep or read, do homework, etc. Then it was for the required 7-8 hours of sleeping and maybe a nap on the weekends. Now that I have a puppy who needs to be out first thing in the morning and likes constant attention, I see very little of my bed.
I do see a lot more of my new (Corona) sofa, though!
Not enough!
With two of us in our very tiny apartment, my husband and I have found that in order to keep too much stress out of our lives one of us needs to be in the living room reading or watching a movie and the other one needs to be in the bedroom. Honestly, intense shows right before bed do not relax me or help me sleep.
There needs to be another option on the survey:
Not enough!
I love sleeping in, lounging, reading, snacking, napping in bed but never get enough of it. Always trying to get there :)
I live in a studio and use my futon as a sofa and bed. Actually, I don't set it down into the bed position very often.
The idea of eating and working in bed makes me think of illness, like the flu, or deep depression.
Im never home, I sleep a minimum of 5 hours a day, including the weekends when my body wakes me up 2 hours after I was supposed to wake up during the week (7:30am).... Work owns me.
Unless theres a cute girl in my bed from the night before, then ill just lay there and enjoy the warmth...or if I had a little too many the night before
I'm with Ammanda, I chose as much as posssible, but with my schedule it's usually only the requisite 8 hours to stay alert during the day. Not enough sounds about right! When hubby and I were on our own we used to watch tv in bed (the TV is in the lounge - you can see it crystal clear from our bedrooom) but now we have a friend living with us I have found myself spending less and less time in bed and more time on the beautiful but uncomfortable sofa.
Too little is my answer! Life with young kids doesn't allow for much slumbering, I'm hoping life with slightly older kids will. So I'll just have to wait a few years...

We recently purchased a new mattress and it has changed how we sleep and literally, walk. =) It's an organic Viveteque mattress - very comfortable. It's made with organic cotton, wool and natural latex. I love it!
I agree with gordon. Eating, working, etc. in bed reminds me of being sick. The last time I ate in bed was when I had the stomach flu and nibbled on a cracker (and I got crumbs in the bed!).
But we definitely don't spend enough time in bed because of the babies (one and two years old) waking up during the night and early in the morning. We can't believe we used to be able to sleep all night long!
Happily, I have a loft bed, which disuades you from these things a bit - especially since my desk is under my bed and I don't have a laptop, so if I want to use it, I HAVE to get out. I don't eat in bed (crumbs in the sheet, no thanks), and while I do go up there to read, I'm looking for a reading nook specifically to avoid that.
On the other hand, it's the summer holidays at the moment, so I'm spending a lot more time sleeping than usual! (Mmm, sleeping in until ten.)
I loooooove my bed, it's so comfy. I only spend sleeping hours there, though. 9 to 10 hours in the winter and right around 8 hours in the summer.
