Lets talk money. Yes, we know, our mom told us it was rude to talk about money, too. But let's talk turkey here - from the paint on the wall to the crib, from the picture frames to the rug on the floor - everything but the clothes your baby wears and the diapers you change - starting from scratch, what do you think is a reasonable amount to spend to design a nursery or kids room?

When doing my son's nursery, I took (and still take) the following into consideration: gifts (baby shower, birth, birthday), craigslist, clearance sections, DIY projects, and the fact that babies really don't need a ton of stuff.
I totally agree with exxon, but when it comes time, I think I'm not going to be afraid of spending a bit more on things that can be re-purposed later on in the child's life or elsewhere in our home. This is because of the influence AT Nursery has had on my options, to see what else is out there--and it's great!
I can't believe that anyone really thinks anything over $5,000 is reasonable.
Really, if you're ceative and get just the necessities it should be under $1,000 I think. Although, I have seen some cool, but pricey things shown in "the Nursery".
Maybe I'm missing some items in my minds list. What are the items/prices on everyone else's list? Not the necessities like we've talked about before on AT, but the things that you thought of in order to come up w/ the reasonable amount that you voted for?
Craigslist is awesome and we were thus somewhat economical in decorating the nursery...Except for a few more expensive options including zero VOC paint, which is about $40/gallon, two Avalisa canvases, and the Stokke crib that we fell in love with, and which the grandparents willingly splurged on. Off of Craigslist we got a dresser/changing table for $40 (had to repaint), a glider/ottoman for $80, a storage cabinet $200 (yes that's expensive, but it is teak and will grow with us and our son), and a book shelf for $25. We also picked up a great cat print from etsy for $12 and made some other "art" from Celestial Seasonings postcards. So, including the crib our nursery ran about $1500, but if we had picked a crib on Craigslist we could have easily made it in the $500 to $1000 range.
