- What I Love About My Small Home:
- We love that we can fit all five of us and our not-so-small German Shepherd! The forced efficiency has been a blessing and real change of pace, moving to Chicago from suburbia. We're still able to do everything we want and more—from homeschooling at the table and chalkboard (the heart of our home) to hosting playdates! We've all grown that much closer, too. There's no real escape unless we all hop the bus to a museum or park around the corner!
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Again, coming from the suburbs, we were used to extra space, not to mention a basement and attic. We've trimmed our belongings to the essentials, keep a small storage unit and really live the William Morris maxim, "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." Maximizing storage opportunities in the space is a must as well. Living in a true loft, we've gone vertical, installing storage above the girls' closet and using a tall wardrobe in our tiny "master" bedroom (our three girls are a better fit in the true master).

I was wondering the same thing. I suspect they act like booster seats to raise the seat height for children?
Btw, I really love the exposed brick and the kids room!
I like the high ceiling. Is there a significance to the numbers above the television?
I have the same sourav table but I LOVE how you put different chairs there. I just have the benches and chairs that came with it but I like yours better! And love the fabric over the bed - you have my vote from a fellow chicagoan!
We have one of the green things. It's called the Kaboost, and it's great for the kid who decides he's too old for a high chair but still can't reach the table very well. They also make the chair extra sturdy and almost impossible to tip over. And no, I don't work for them or anything. This is just one of the few bits of baby gear that totally lived up to the hype.
I would have like to see what you have done with the bathroom and kitchen to fairly rate your home. I love your table.
Love the loft feel! The high ceilings and exposed brick are really cool!
Two adorable kids rooms today! Do tell about the numbers.
A family of five? Wow - well done! That deserves a vote!
The nursery is super cute! Nice!
Our house is listed in the small category too, so I really shouldn't be favorite-ing the competition ;) but i LOVE your house and the fact that you have a family of 5. Nice work! We are a fam of 3 and it helps me realize that another kidlet isn't out of the question in our current abode.
Adorable and I especially love that a "full" family lives here. Nice to see folks that realize they don't need a room for every person in the house.
Awesome place. Makes me feel like I live in a cluttered mess! Down sizing never looked better - you all have done an awesome job! Good luck. You definitely have my vote!
Love the girls room. How do you keep it so clean? Makes me want to home and re-organize.
I like the simplicity of the bedroom...very appealing.
Thanks everybody for the kind comments! GIRL FROM OAKTOWN got the Kaboost exactly right—we love the cleaner look and it gets our kids at a good height.
We would have loved to post pictures of our bathroom and kitchen, as well as the kid's room organization, but were obviously limited with picture count and a not-so-short focal lens length (especially for those spaces). Sorry! The vintage gas station numbers above the TV don't have any special meaning—we just love the graphic quality of them. It's a tough spot for artwork, too. We didn't want anything too representational there.
Thanks again for the comments!
What a wonderful job! You deserve my vote too!
So proud of this space. Overwhelmed with the sweetness of the kids room. Well done!!
Hi SuziQRS , I really like your tv stand. Where did you get it?
O and you must tell where you got the bookcase/cabinet with the calk board covers?! Is it a DIY?
Awesome job! I really love the way you have utilized the small space.
Love seeing a house that includes kids!! The little ones change a space so much!
I just went back and looked closer....wow...homeschooling!! You're going to have to share how you store all the art supplies, books, ect...and it's still so clean and neat! And I love that you swapped bedrooms with the kids....great idea!!
Five people and a German Shepherd in 996sq ft? Amazing.
Beautifully done, Good Luck!
awesome! We are a family of 5 living in 975 square feet. It can be done! I love how everything is so clean and organized. Less is more!
Fantastic and beautiful use of a small space. You have my vote.
Thanks to everyone for the nice comments! To answer some of the new questions...
PERUNA- The TV Stand is an IKEA Leksvik. The boxes inside are also IKEA, we just covered the top set with vintage maps.
SSHARP3233- The chalkboard cabinet is also an IKEA piece that I don't think they sell anymore. It was originally white and we did do a bit of DIY by priming the front of the cabinets with magnetic primer and then covering it with chalkboard paint.
MRSMK- I store all of the homeschool/art supplies in the chalkboard covered cabinets. Everything we need is organized inside and within reach. We do most of our schooling in that area so it works out nicely and it's "hidden" too! Children's books are housed in the girls bedroom for easier access.
Your place is wonderful! Good luck!
nice work suziqrs! ;) you and gpa are amazing. what an awesome home you guys have! xo
Very nicely done! I am homeschooling two boys in 780 sq. ft., and I very much admire how you've integrated your schooling stuff into the home, while keeping it all elegant.
Great style! It's hard to believe that you're from the 'burbs! (Joke of course) Love the cafe lights in the kids room. Looks like a fun place to live!
Definitely favorited.
very nicely done
This place is neat! Will there be a full tour?
