We've recently seen homes in spaces that were formerly a Firehouse and a Bank. The newest New York Magazine has a great little peek into the studio and living space of artists
Thomas Nozkowski and Joyce Robinsformer. They moved into a former synagogue on Hester street in 1967. After spending about $3000 on renovations, the space hasn't changed a lot in the forty years they've lived and worked there...

They built the bookshelves themselves.

wow--I love every inch--shows that when forms marries function they never go out of style.
SUPER FREAKIN' WOW!
A
Floor to ceiling books, the balcony, all that nice white space, I love it! And the prayer books is a very sweet touch.
dream home.
Please don't tell me this is rent controlled and they are paying $386/month.
Guh.
This doesn't really do much for me. It's much more of a studio than a home.
What is cool is the 2 people still sharing the same space after so many years not the studio.
They spent $3,00 on renovations 40 years ago? That would be only about $20,000 in current consumer value, but I doubt any contractor in New York would do it for so little today.
Love it!
