We snapped this photo a few months ago on a trip to San Francisco, at our friend Mike's apartment. Mike's roommate is a horticulturist, and every tabletop in their apartment is covered in plants...
Although it was hard to clear space to eat on the kitchen table, we liked the overall feel of their home and its many plants. Creating small container gardens on surfaces throughout a space definitely adds life to an interior.
What about the folks out there? Are any of you tabletop gardeners?

I think it looks much better with plants in groups than on the windowsill, you can combine different heights and hide plants that are looking a little "sad" but that you don´t want to throw away. We decided we do not have enough space for such a big table with only plants though, and the cats needed the windowsills back so they could sit there and watch birds.
I think the biggest problem with plants on windowsills is that they face outward, so you look at their backsides (of their stems and leaves, I mean, lol.) The trouble is finding a spot where the plants can flourish deeper into the room. I'm always frustrated when I read home decor mags and see plants displayed in places I know they can't really grow! Although I may trot out something pretty for company, I mostly like my plants to be decorative in a place where they are happy growing.
We have a bedroom with a big west window. Gets pretty hot in summer but boy, the light is great! Even the far wall has enough light for the gigantic pothos hanging and trailing over an empty ornate frame. I do have some plants *near* the windows. We set up some wooden crates that are a little lower than the windowsill where cats and plants both have room to soak up the sun. So I guess it's sort of a tabletop garden.
In the rest of the apt... maybe I'll have to make some plamps.
