Although we've been hearing rumours that brass and bronze are back, many of us still prefer the clean cool look of silver. But, what if you fall in love with a bronze something? Now what? We found this tip that will turn your brass object into silver faster than you can say Abracadabra!
According to this post we found on new blog The Modness (and Madness) of 9251, all it takes is a can of KleanStrip KS-3 Premium stripper. Spray it on and the brass will bubble off, revealing a clean silver shine.
Incidentally, we're looking forward to discovering what Jan Michael and Jessica learn as they transform their mid-century home back to its former glory.

er....how do you know it's all clean shiny silver under there?
How about a patch test on the bottom, to see underneath the brass and bronze without messing up the original piece?
That's only if they have a "brass coating" on them. The product doesn't perform alchemy...
Uhh...yeah, this is rather misleading. Going to the source article, you find that the author "had a gut feeling that the lamp was made of aluminum or some other light metal."
This technique will only work on brass PLATED items, not items that are solid brass or bronze - which are copper alloy metals.
Hmmm, I think it is likely my doorknobs are brass plated, but I am not sure about the fireplace insert, which is what I'd really like to change. I have working with caustic chemicals though.
Sounds like alchemy to me!
nooooooo just give the brass stuff to me if you don't like it
It's a miracle!
@ValHalla , just spray the fireplace insert with high heat stove paint. I freshen mine every spring with a hand sanding, and a coat of fresh black or grey stove paint. Easy!
thanks for the great tip, Medusa. I've been waffling over tackling it or just saving up for a replacement--fireplace inserts are surprisingly expensive!
@ValHalla, I've painted radiators with Rustoleum high-heat paint (in a can -- haven't used the spray paint). It works very well.
We have hideous "brass-n-glass" doors on our fireplace that I plan to paint with Rustoleum.
viva brass! i've been over silver for years. and there are so many cool, antique-y (not gaudy) brass objects/fixtures out there.
Any tips on turning chrome into bronze? I have a chandelier that is chrome and I am so over shiny silver metal (hence a lot of bronze and mother of pearl in my place) and would like to know if there is anyway other than good ol spray paint I could do? Metal leaf?
Help.
I laughed so hard at this! Thanks AT.
I hate the look of brass. Silver, stainless steel, aluminum, whatever--as long as it isn't yellow.
Mr. Clean Magic Erasers do the same thing to brass coated items.
Sounds creepily toxic...
I was kind of hoping this would be about DIY electroplating! In fact it's the reverse...
don't ruin the braaassss!

I feel like some of the authors of these posts don't think beyond the available material- just regurgitating someone else's blog. Are they getting paid for this? Yikes!
All brass and bronze can be silver plated , but good work is gonna cost ya $$$
Yeah, I say it's time for someone to publish an at-home electroplating guide. Just get some old silverware from an antiques shop...
