We recently checked out a Smart Car interior for the first time and were surprised at how spacious it felt. While the cab of a car is a far cry from our home interiors, we can still remember a few lessons from the Smart Car when it comes to our small homes...

  • Light. The car we sat in was equipped with the "panorama roof", which allows light to penetrate the entire roof of the car. Lots of light can definitely help a small room feel more spacious. See some examples at Small Space Solution: Skylights
  • A place for everything and everything in its place. The Smart Car has a well-organized dash, highly visible controls, and storage features you find in larger cars. Compact storage designed with efficiency in mind can work wonders in a small home, too.
  • Quality. The Smart Car is engineered by Mercedes-Benz and its handling just feels solid. Our homes can also be built with quality and solidity in mind. Small homes can be a great opportunity to really pay attention to the details and maybe spend a little more per square foot, resulting in higher quality.
