AT reader Curtis shares with us his ceiling tile project that was published on the Talissa Decor website...
The tiles are made of polystyrene and are made to look like a tin ceiling. Curtis selected an art deco pattern, "U-2", for his apartment. According to his description, the tiles are cut simply using a utility knife. (thanks for sharing, Curtis!)

Thanks! Well, my room is 12' x 20' and I used their little calculator feature which said that I needed 91 tiles at the minimum, but suggested getting 10% more in case I broke some during installation, so it thought I needed 99 of them, but I rounded up to an even 100.
I did NOT end up wasting any, so I have 9 left in case I ever need to repair from a leak or something.
Including shipping, my order came to about $409, which I thought was kind of amazing.
Sound insulation? I'm very lucky that I have such a quiet upstairs neighbor, and she never hears me, so I can't exactly say how much this helps, but I do think it's helping make the sound reverberation (which wasn't bad to start with) even less so, since it's kind of absorbing some of the sound.

I absolutely love these.
Curtis chose a design so beautifully integrated into his apartment, I'm surprised they haven't "always" been there. I am impressed.
Some day I think I might investigate whether they can go right over the popcorn ceiling.

I think that in the installation instructions it actually mentions that there's sort of not much prep to speak of at all to do to your popcorn ceiling before applying these.
They also have another whole type which is for those dropped ceilings with the grids, by the way.
I would never have thought this gorgeous place could be improved upon but Curtis has done it again! BRAVO!!!

Are these tiles a fire hazard?

Their site says they're "Fire retardant - will not contribute to a spreading fire" and by the way, the stuff you put it on with (which they don't sell but specify the name of) says on the container that it's environmentally friendly enough to contribute to LEED certification, which is the big new "green" thing.
And then I painted them with Benjamin Moore's "Aura" paint which is the lowest VOC's, so I feel pretty good about every aspect of this thing, actually.
