Here is my floor plan for my sun room/family room/lots of other functions. It primarily will be a family room and an office area though, so here are the main pieces I'm thinking:
A. Sectional sofa.
B. A couple of tables that can easily be moved around.
C. An area rug with some pattern and color.
D. A media cabinet/console.
E. Side chair.
F. End table.
G. Ladder shelf that my husband built. (This piece was originally built for our bathroom, but I want to try it in this space because it can hold plants and my printer.)
J. Storage cabinet for files and office supplies.
K. Wall cabinets/shelves.
As an interior designer I have drawn lots of floor plans over the years, so putting one together came pretty naturally for me. What's tricky though is choosing one layout over another. At work we usually put together different options for the client to choose from because there's often a number of different solutions. This time, however, I'm the one making the decision. It's so much easier when it's someone else!
Fortunately some things made it easier for me to land on a layout. I already own a sectional sofa—a piece we bought earlier in the year intended for this room—and it really has just one good spot in the room, so everything sort of falls into place after that. And then the location of the windows and doors helped to define my office area. I played around with some different ways of orienting the desk, but I think this makes the most sense.
I already have the sectional and the desk and maybe a side chair, but everything else will have to be either made or purchased. If I run out of time/money during this Style Cure to do the planned storage cabinet and wall shelves in the office area, I have a bookshelf that I might put there in the meantime. The big purchase will most likely be the media cabinet, but I'm hoping to find something awesome, like the piece I found the other day, at a great price.
