We're very picky about flatware, since it's not simply about how it looks, but also about how it feels in your hand and how it fits in your mouth. Our household includes both small and large hands and mouths, so we've found it hard to find a set that fits -- and that doesn't break the bank. Happily, Target has solved our problem, at least for the time being, with this set.
Their Carry-On Polished stainless flatware is a deal, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You probably won't pass it down to your grandchildren, but with Danish modern styling it's as sleek as a sans serif typeface. And at $70 for eight place settings and serving pieces, there really is no complaining about the lack of legacy potential. Plus it includes an additional place setting in a mini size, so there's something to make all the mouths in our house happy.
Any other nominees?

I have the "Clark" flatware from Crate & Barrel, & I really like it. Of course it's not as cheap as the Target set, but on the other hand I'm picky in the same way about flatware, & this was as close to perfect all around as I could find at a decent price. (click on my name for the link)
I have had this flatware for the past 4.5 years. It is great. It's extremely sturdy. I also feel like these utensils look good with a variety of dishes.
The nominee would be EQ3 and their take on flatware.
Whoa ho! I'll have to look at these on the next mission to Target.
I'm not fussy about flatware design so much as hostile toward most examples of it.
Wende,
I checked out the East Bay Target stores in Walnut Creek and San Ramon. Neither one of them carried that flatware design.
