Lockitron keyless entry system
Okay, I'll admit I've lost my keys on more than one occasion, or even perhaps "misplaced" my cellphone which I just put down a few minutes ago. Maybe I've forgotten to lock the front door once or twice, and the question of whether I left the oven on keeps me stressed until I can double and triple check. But if you're more than occasionally forgetful, there are several devices which can help...
You're Always Forgetting to Turn Off the Lights: Maybe you've run out the door in a rush or off on a weekend trip when you realize you left all the house lights on. New wireless network connected systems like Belkin's WeMo devices can allow homeowners to manage lights (and other plugged-in appliances) from afar using iOS and Android apps. These automation controls are also useful for turning on lights while away, for home security.
Always Forgetting to Lock the Front Door: Do you often worry and wonder whether you remembered to lock the front door? Now there's no need to wonder - simply check on a smartphone and lock/unlock with the click of a button using the Lockitron keyless entry system. Available for pre-order for $179.00, it might be worth it for the peace of mind alone.
Losing Car and House Keys: Finally, a way to stop misplacing everything! The small keychain sized Tile attaches to anything that's likely to be misplaced, from wallets and keys and phones to even bicycles, cars, and more. Use a smartphone to track the tiles and finally find out where the car keys went. Each tag costs $18.95, so finding the missing item is doubly important!
I reviewed the Cobra Tag a while back when first released, and since then the keychain accessory has continued to help me find my keys quite a few times when otherwise all hope would be lost. For under $40 the Bluetooth device offers a 2 way separation alarm, so as I walk away from my keys or phone I'm gently reminded, as long as I've got one on me. It's smart tagging helps track lost belongings, even offering last known locations if the batteries die.
Cubit can be customized to do a lot of things, including motion detection and real-time notifications. It's the range-finder that gets us excited. Attach individual Cubits to keys, wallets, smartphones, bikes and use the free app to find it when it goes missing. Which makes us wonder how to find a missing smartphone using that smartphone's app? Available in early 2014.
Forgetting to turn on or off the A/C or Heating System: We've covered the Nest Thermostat before, and I can't stress enough the intuitiveness and energy savings of this beautiful little unit, one which I installed in my very own home. What has gone a bit unsaid though is the peace of mind it brings in those energy savings. I've cranked up the AC on a hot day and then left for the day and worried about whether I turned off the AC or not.
Or inversely I might not remember if I left it cool enough for my dog to be comfortable and safe. Either way, with the Nest's smartphone app I can remotely connect in and check and adjust my settings without worry. It's costly at $249.00, but I've found its connected convenience has paid back its worth quickly.
There are many other keychain and sticker type devices available today or in the works, all designed to keep track or find lost keys, household items, or even pets, including:
So no matter how forgetful, there are plenty of smart reminders to help!
