Here is repurposing at it's “bear-y” best (ahem, sorry) — intricately patterned rugs hand-sewn from used teddy bears by artist Agustina Woodgate. There is something both wonderful, hilarious, and ever-so-slightly disturbing about the idea of cherished toys finding new life as fuzzy floor coverings.
The Miami-based artist, originally from Argentina, likens the works to rugs from the oriental tradition adding a sense of gravity to their playful kitsch:
The rugs not only reference the personal histories of the toy's owners, but investigate the rug as an object organizing and displaying memories and lineages. In Eastern Cultures, the oriental rug centralizes the living space in pattern, operating beyond utility to depict the spiritual and mental world in woven form.

Does anyone else find this more than a wee bit creepy? maybe it's just me...
totally creepy.
gross
Really? I thought it was fun & cute!
Not like those dismembered baby dolls...
I love it. I'm picking up what you're putting down.
I don't know about creepy, but I find it a little sad! But then, I am That Person who still has their cherished toys from when they were younger. They are kind of cute, though.
Gross? Really? When you try not to think about it, and instead just look at the pattern, they are beautiful--especially the last one!
They're beautifully done! Kudos to the designer.
Unfortunately, I don't think I could get over the "skinned teddy bear" thing... but that's just a personal hangup.
SICK.
HA! I think these are funny and clever, also pretty. I can just imagine someone saying, "Oh, I love your rug! Where did you get it??" And then you would tell them it is made out of old "skinned" teddy bears! Wacky. But, I definitely like them better than real bear skin rugs--poor bears!
I think it's hilarious!
I think this just points out how even more creepy a real bear skin rug really is.
Plus, i also think its hilarious. They are teddy bears, not real live breathing, feeling, bears.
I think it's super creative...
Question, did the bears have red stuffing?
youg uys are crazy, this is amazing!! i love them!!
While I don't think I'd use this as a rug in my main living area, I think this is a super adorable idea for baby room rug...or something my dog would TOTALLY hog if laid on the floor...it has cozy for the tosies written all over it!!!! ;)
These are pretty cool. The overblown artist statement made me roll my eyes, as usual.
Gross and very creepy.
FINALLY! A use for all those DANG stuffed animals my kids have been accumulating! I LOVE it!
Bear skin rugs without the cruelty, brilliant idea. Killing and skinning a bear for a rug, now that's creepy and gross.
Hey Thanks a lot for posting this!
This rugs are intended to be a way to reuse all those stuffed animals that have been left behind. They are all used. I still have mine in my memory box. So these rug collections is also a comment on the relationship we have with objects, specially this one. Its a global archetype.
Gross and creepy... those are the ones from real animals!!!!! this is just garbage we produce and then leave behind.
thanks for the great comments
Hmm...I'm not sure if I like it or not. I don't mind the one in the middle.
I wonder if the artist used the cheap stuffed animals from the claw machines, or if she finally figured out what to do with all those beanie babies. :)
Her website shows the texture more clearly. I've decided I like them, but still would never ever own one.
Amazing!!!! This is what Alexander McQueen and Lady Gaga's babies would have in their room!
The design and shapes are spectacular!
Funny, smart and the coolest most interesting thing I have seen for a really long time.
How is this creepy in the least?? I think it's wonderful! I can only imagine the hours she put in on these. Totally amazing...
Wacky is the best word so far! Strange maybe. I don't find them creepy, but like a lot of installation type art, I can find them clever without wanting one in my home. (But then I never much like the stuffed animals when they were intact, either. Except for Esmerelda, the stuffed platypus toy my husband gave me once... and that's more because it's weird!)
I like! I totally want! The middle one is gorgeous! How is this different from re-purposing sweaters into pillows, neckties into aprons or even old t-shirts into quilts? REAL animal hide/horns/bone in your home? Creepy!!
Yikes. I know I anthropomorphize more than the average person, I find this horrifying. This would totally make me feel bad every time I looked at it, with all those maimed little imaginary friends. It reminds me of those people who stuff their pet after they have died.
But yeah, I can't deny it is still better than things made from real animals.
These are beyond awesome. Colourful and textural with a nice dose of weird.
I'd like to see a few more recognisable bits of bear (or unicorn, or frog, or whatever) incorporated into the designs, but I'm kinda transgressive like that.
Carmen, I was thinking the same thing haha, my dog would NEVER move from this rug if I had one!
I wonder if one of those GIANT ones from the boardwalk would make this job easier? the artist should put advertisements on craigslist in towns like point pleasant and seaside asking for donations of the giant stuffed animals (ex girlfriends and frustrated parents are probably dying to get rid of those things)
It would feel so nice on the feet.... :O
Man, I was rough on my toys, I guess... I don't think any of my truly loved stuffed animals would have much "fur" to yield.
Personally, I like the kaleidoscope patterns but don't know how well these would go over with children- they might never ever let go of their stuffed animal for fear that an adult might think that it has been discarded and ready to be unstuffed and skinned.
These are beautiful. What is so gross about taking the stuffing out of a fabric toy and reusing the colorful fabric for something beautiful?
Not creepy at all! Way grosser to use animal hide.
I think it's a perfect solution for the hordes of stuffed animals sitting in bags in the basement. What else would you do with them, if not repurpose? Some thrift places won't take them because they can be carriers of small pests (fleas, etc).
I saw these hanging at Spinello Projects @ the Scope NY show recently. They are truly unique, enormous and beautiful in person. I love that these pieces are works of art but are also meant to be used as rugs. I would love to own one of these!
