The floor lamp is a great multi-purpose furnishing that is useful when overhead lighting is lacking or you need a bit of brightness for a detailed task, and on top of that, it's an easy statement home accessory. Dramatic modern floor lamps like the one above can cost up to $3000 and more — but is it worth it?
Two of my favorite floor lamps are the Signal floor lamp by Jieldé and the Arco Lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers. Both are design classics that have been around for decades, and will surely be respected and admired for years to come. But at around $1000 and $3000 respectively, the price seems too high to stomach. The only floor lamp I've ever purchased is a $30 fixture from IKEA, and until I'm ready to pony up the cash for the designs I admire, it's the most I'll ever spend.
What's your floor lamp threshold? Do you spend based on function, or are you willing to pay extra because of the design or aspirational value?
