To pull together our gift guides this year we're asking the experts: YOU! You know best what gifts your children have enjoyed at different stages of their lives. Share your wisdom with fellow parents, aunties, uncles, and grandparents. Bikes, art supplies, science kits, marble runs?
What are the best gifts to give young school kids, approximately ages 5-8 for the holidays? You can leave a link to a specific product or just give a general idea of a gift your child has enjoyed or has asked for.

Walkie-talkies! That's what my 6.5 year old girl is getting for Christmas. And the big shared Santa gift with her 3-year-old sister is a teepee (gifted from a friend whose kids have outgrown it), sleeping bags, flashlights and some good books.

uno cards, yahtzee, bananagrams
legos
roald dahl box set of books, puppy place books, and olive the other reindeer book
I have really struggled with Christmas gifts for my 5 1/2 year old son this year. He absolutely loves ninjas and spies and secret agents and anything along those lines. We put together our own "Spy/Secret Agent" costume for him w/ black cargo pants, black long sleeve tee and a black child's vest with lots of pockets to store his gear.
Then we purchased a set of gadgets he can use to be a ninja, spy, secret agent or whatever he can imagine!
Gear includes: black binoculars, a headlamp, a voice scrambler, flashlight, motion tracker and walkie talkies.

Also bought him legos (this seems to be the most popular item for boys his age!) and a tabletop foosball table (to be shared with is older sister).
I have a 5 1/2 year old boy.
My suggestions:
-Lego kits or games
-Zoobs (neat building toy)
-Mad Libs
-Remote controlled car
-Scooter
-walkie talkies
-books
-Quirkle (fun game)
-complete set of Magic Schoolbus DVDs
