An oldie-but-goodie are the linked paper rings. They don’t hold treats, but they are extremely helpful for counting down the days for children too young to full grasp numbers or calendars.
A blogger I follow just did the most amazing Advent calendar as well:

AAAH - @northstory - what a brilliant advent calendar! I want to open all of them.
@northstory What an adorable advent calendar! Each box is so thoughtful.
My mother made an advent calendar for my sister and I when we were kids that she still puts up. It’s a felt Christmas tree with Velcro circles. The trunk of the tree is a pouch that holds decorative buttons with the other side of the Velcro on the back. The last button to go on was an embroidered star.
I am just developing my idea for this year so these were inspiring. I traditionally give my nephew an advent calendar and sometimes it is the Lego Advent Calendar because who doesn't want Lego Santa and a Lego fire, but sometimes I create one for him. If the kids are into any kind of card game like YuGiOH or whatever its called, some colorful envelopes and viola! This year he is 11 and I am thinking on an itunes advent calendar with one new song or christmas carol a day.
some great ideas. i especially like the cones; how simple!!
i mentioned this in a similar post last year, but now i have some photos!
I love this idea. This is perfect for the children !!! A christmas count down ....
There is also this gorgeous one I'm in love with on Etsy for $15.00! It's way more "Jesusy" though.

I created our advent calendar with a vintage letterpress tray. http://www.lifeonchurchill.com/2012/11/diy-letterpress-tray-advent-calendar.html
I'm working on a DIY advent calendar using this gingerbread house gable box pattern https://www.etsy.com/listing/36328218/christmas-gable-box-template-tasty-manor just printing them smaller.
We are filling each box with a note and a fun activity to do with our toddler.
Ideas so far are jump on the trampoline with flippers on, build a hut, paint the pavement ( with water and old house brushes), still working on the rest....
