We often sing the praises of Ikea's Expedit bookcase (which we described as a workhorse) because the cube shelving has such excellent storage potential...but then what? Books and larger toys can fly solo, but you'll likely want to use storage bins for kids' clothes, shoes and toys. Jump below to find ten options to fit your Expedit.
The interior dimension of each Expedit cube is (a smidge over) 13" wide, (a smidge over) 13" high and 15.25" deep. In our experience it's best to use bins or baskets that are not too tight (so they remove easily) or too small (why waste the space?). All of the options below fall within these parameters - feel free to add a link to others.
FIRST ROW
• 1 Strapping Cube ($10)
• 2 Canvas Storage Bin ($36)
• 3 Drona Box ($5)
• 4 Household Essentials Dots ($13, note: takes 1-2 months to deliver)
• 5 JJ Cole Storage Cube ($17)
SECOND ROW
• 6 Branas Basket ($10)
• 7 Large Tribeca Bin ($12)
• 8 Ropers Cube Basket ($15, note: shipping early June)
• 9 Large Aluminum-Framed Bin ($30)
• 10 Small Eco-Fabric Bin ($13)

We use the expedit for clothing storage and the Itso large fabric bin is the PERFECT fit (13" X 13" x 13.25") It also has a nice cutout handle for easy access. Goes on sale often at Target.

A great post - always good to see what alternatives are out there to the basic IKEA pink.
We've got a couple of Itso bins for our Expedit too, but they don't fit in *all* of the cubes. What gives?!
We use the Target itso as well! it's totally perfect!! shocked to not see it here as one of the options - it's the best by far: affordable, available, colorful, i am even thinking about embroidering it with the toy categories! Looks like pottery barn/serena & lily - for under $10.
thanks for this! i have about eighty different bins and baskets i've bought for my expedits and the only things that i love in them are the clear drawers that are made to go in it, but i don't really like them.
Got any ideas for bins that can be washed or wiped out easily? We use the canvas ones from target but dog hair is always trapped inside.
Love those first "strap" bins- great colors.

This seems to come up often, and every time it does I post a link to the Itso bins we use. So why stop now? :)

I already have the strapping bins in orange on order for my sons room, I can not wait until they come in, they are going to be great.

We also use the Itso bins from Target, they fit perfectly!
Ohdeeoh, are you mind readers? Last night, I spent four hours researching bins online for our Expedit. Some of these are new to me. I too agree that the Itso fits the best but should have more color option than the four on the website. I love seeing picture of people's Expedits in action... love getting ideas for organizing and configurations.
I wish you'd do a similar post for the Billy Bookcases. Container Store has some clear plastic containers that can be closed-- great for small toys but I need something bigger as well. I love that Billy can have doors.
I have a few of those strapping cubes from Land of Nod. LOVE them. They really are very sturdy too. I used a few as toy cubes and they outlasted him trying to stand in them or fall on them. Also, they have much larger baskets in the same colors so you can use one of those for a hamper and everything can match. I really do love them.
Have to say I LOVE just attaching doors on hinges to the some of the cubbies.
If your expedit sticks out into a room the doors make for a giggle-fit of peek-a-boo with a toddler, or better yet, two toddlers!
PucciLevy et al. - I considered including the Itso bins but they were sold out at Target online and they didn't have them at my local Target the last time I was there either so I was afraid to send anyone on a wild goose chase. But good to know lots of folks are still able to get and use them!

Has anyone tried the new Martha Stewart cube storage and fabric boxes? We saw them at Home Depot this weekend and the colors are great. http://www.homedepot.com/Storage-Storage-Totes-Baskets/Martha-Stewart-Living/h_d1/N-5yc1vZb9ojZ4tgZ1xiu/R-202040802/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
have the strapping bins from land of nod, they're great if there's nothing heavy in them. now have the dwellstudio small storage bins and they're amazing. you can even wipe them out if they're dirty, fold up if not in use, etc. love them.
We have the itso containers and they work perfectly!
After reading the comments here I went out and bought a couple Itso cubes for my Expedit, and they are perfect. $8.99 each, and I like them better than any of Ikea's options.

I use the Branas baskets in both my Expidit bookcases. The one in the family room holds DVDs, toys, shoes and other items. The one in my office holds design samples. They are so chic and sturdy. I love them.
Milk crates fit in an Expedit perfectly. And they're "free."
We have four Branas baskets and four blue Drona boxes from IKEA. They both fit wonderfully, but the Branas are kinda cheaply put together (but look great) and I don't love the color blue of the Drona. It's fun to change up the various bins.
The ITSO bins from Target also fit perfectly, but I can't seem to find a color I like. They have a cool rainbow dot design available that I might try.
There are some decent ones even on Walmart.com, around $12 each. I haven't tried them personally though.

There are even some kids' ones with Toy Story and Tinkerbell.
I wish I'd see this post a few weeks ago, because I really like the Household Essentials Dots. I recently bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00313JQE4/ref=oss_product (TWO FOR $10.99.) They're not stunningly beautiful, but they fit Expedit shelves quite nicely.
I want espresso-colored cd-sized storage boxes and magazine holders, binders, or file boxes to go in mine. I bought 4 Nostalgisk boxes and a few Nostalgisk mag holders and then realized they're perfect (size, appearance, and price) for fitting out my whole 2x4 Expedit, but now they're not available any more. Any ideas on where I can get my hands on some more of these, or something similar (especially the cd-sized boxes, which are sadly becoming rare in this digital music age)?
I've even thought of making some myself using the boxes I have as a pattern. Does anyone have tips for making handmade boxes that look good and stay together with semi-heavy storage use?
We have two expedits, and we use itso from Target; Real Simple boxes with lids that I also purchased from Target a few years ago that must not be available anywhere anymore; the "Couldah" bins from Scout, which have handles on opposite sides, which is handy; and some super flexible woven laundry-style baskets that are easy for my daughter to pull out to stash her stuffed animals and dolls. LOVE the expedit as a room divider!!
We love the outdoors - and use 4 of the baskets (1) to store beach towels in the pool area (2) one for wet towels (at end of day - easy to carry to washer) (3) condiments transport - to grill area (stores easily in extra frig) (4) keep paper plates, paper towels, pastic wear & cups under the bar in our outdoor kitchen.. I LOVE my baskets.... IKEA rocks...
I know this post is a couple of years old, but I just wanted to share my delight at discovering these Ikea Skubb boxes that perfectly fit the expedit.
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/80210551
Cheap, surprisingly solid (for clothing and lightweight things anyway), nice quality, and they fold down when you don't need them.
I personally didn't like the vertical handle so I carefully cut it at the bottom connection point, cut the strap down to 4" or so, folded it under, tacked it with a few stitches of thread, and ironed it flat so it's more of a little "tab" at the top of the box.
Not understanding how the Skubb boxes Sarracenia linked to can work with the Expedit based on the IKEA dimensions listed…
Width: 17 ¼ "
Depth: 21 ¾ "
Height: 13 "
How can these fit in a 13 x 13 x 15.25 space?
What am I missing? A quick google found at least one other page discussing the use of Skubbs in the Expedit as well, so something isn't adding up. Any insight would be appreciated!

Think she meant to post this set of Skubb boxes:

I just left Ikea yesterday & bought them, fit great!
