08-11-08terramai.jpgTerraMai is a great resource for reclaimed woods – they source a variety of places such as railway ties, warehouses, mills, barns, wine barrels, tanks any other previously used wood that may be salvageable to provide unique reclaimed wood products.

Using reclaimed materials is a great eco-friendly choice for your home. Reclaimed materials typically have less embodied energy than new, and save material from what otherwise would be destined for landfills and burned. TerraMai only purchases structures slated for demolition. Whenever possible, the woods they reclaim are re-milled as close to the source as possible. According to the company, TerraMai was the world's first reclaimed wood company to have all of its products FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified.

While they realize that that carbon offset programs are not the ultimate solution, they do offer an accessible way to mitigate the emissions from the production and transport of goods.

We think using reclaimed materials is a great way to add a unique element to your home that will be distinct with character and history. Our favorite item is the railroad tie flooring. The mix of colors and detailing of the wood is beautiful. Unfortunately, because the wood is reclaimed, supplies are limited! Check out the website for more details and pricing.
