Name: Terry and Lyndon
Location: Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts
Size: 1,810 square feet
Years lived in: 7 — owned
Terry and Lyndon know how to make an entrance. There's no typical landing strip or shoe storage here — instead, polished marble and hand-painted Chinoiserie walls sparkle and pop. A flair for the dramatic with a touch of whimsy delight as you tour this detailed duplex.
Terry describes her home as an "adult apartment." The public areas shine and sparkle with mirrors, glass, chandeliers, and antiques like a jewel box of precious stones. Though look closely and there's joie de vivre — soft fabrics, a cozy chair, well-thumbed books. The family room, kitchen, and bedroom are less flashy and more intimate, a reminder that this place is a home and not a palace. Though palaces are more likely to have secret rooms and hidden pathways, and the starry-ceilinged bathroom with a barely distinguishable door falls into that category!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Elegance and drama within a traditional context. Ours is definitely an adult apartment!
Inspiration: A lifetime of experiences-- always looking around, reading, & discovering.
Favorite Element: The elegant architectural features.
Biggest Challenge: The mirrored dining room, because when they came to hang the mirrors, the wall was so out of plumb that a crew had to come fix it first. Also, for some reason, the jib door to the guest bathroom.
What Friends Say: "Wow," "It's gorgeous," and "Who did your design?"
Biggest Embarrassment: That I haven't yet replaced the tacky old chest of drawers in my closet!
Proudest DIY: Coming up with the overall design and working with our architect.
Biggest Indulgence: Probably the Statuario marble floors in the gallery and dining room.
Best Advice: Choose your contractor VERY carefully (get tons of references!) and go to the site every day!

White Enamel Flatwa...
Love the colors on the ceilings and walls. Can you be more specific on brand and name colors please?
I love it.
But unfortunately now we wait for all the haters to roll in with their parade....
^^^^
I'm not going to hate on it. It's just not the usual style you see on AT, you have to admit that!
The apartment certainly is its own version of grand. They obviously wanted that look and went full throttle to get it, so I admire the commitment to their vision.
I'll be first, Pebbles! What's up with the green plastic pot in the first photo?
All very pretty otherwise.
The bathroom is spectacular! I think it's great to see a bit more of a formal style. Lovely!
It's pretty, but I wouldn't want to live there. Like a dollhouse or something.
Not a single one of those photos - with the exception of the kitchen - conveyed anything to me that said "come in! make yourself at home! put your feet up!". It was like a huge flashback to being 6 - "don't touch that! that's breakable! don't smudge it!"
Just my opinion. :)
I like the fact that this is not a typical AT-style home. It's always great to get out of your comfort zone for fresh inspiration! Their use of mirrors, green plants, and fine finishes is translatable to any type of decor. I appreciate how Terry and Lyndon chose to keep a big-enough apartment and turn it into an utterly elegant and pleasurable place to call home.
I love it too! It may be the grandest 1-bedroom I've seen, everything in there looks beautiful.
Beautiful home. The finish trimwork, coffered ceilings, herringbone floors, everything is absolutely perfectly done. The color choices and lighting is so peaceful and relaxing.
Wow. It reminds me of something my grandparents would do. Not in a bad way, just in a "we seem to have lost that touch of elegance" way. It's a lot airier and fresher than my grandfather's, though, so great job! Not everything has to be streamlined/casual/modern to be nice. It's great to see some real ornate homes!
Fab moulding! The abundance of soft lavender-blue and gray, subtly rich textures for an atypical kind of grand. Not the bling bling, gaudy type for sure. Or the austere all-brown-black "lux bachelor" pad from a while back. Very soft and comforting almost like a neat, imperturbable Granny's.
A little grand for my personal tastes, but I have to say their floors are GORGEOUS. I'm drooling looking at that beautiful herringbone wood floor, and the tiled marble on in the dining room. Wowzers. Wish I could afford that...
As a soon to be 51-year-old, I resent ArchDarling's comment. I know plenty of people in the NJ suburbs where I am exiled younger than that whose decorating style skews 'old' - read traditional and colonial, and not in a good way. And since when was 50 elderly? Not everyone who reads this site is a 20something.
This wouldn't be for me, but I do love the bold choices here. Especially that wallpaper in the hidden bathroom (powder room?), and the patterned carpet in the family room. Such a break from the usual neutrals!
I also love all the light fixtures. They certainly put an enormous effort into lighting.
I did look at that dining room and think, wow, it must echo like crazy in there. The floors and walls are all hard, sound reflecting surfaces, with no fabric or carpet to absorb sound.
^^^
Texan, no worries, my post seems to have been deleted. But I don't think I ever said that 50 is old, nor did I ever describe their decorating style as old. I just said it was pretentious (so I expect this post to be deleted, too).
But 50 is older than 20-something. I am sure we can agree on that. Most people who are 50 have homes that are differently decorated than the homes of 20 year olds if only because of the difference in discretionary income.
And I totally agree, there are plenty of 20-something whose tastes skews towards traditional and colonial.
There's nothing really bad about this place, its just a different style than what you normally see. I think, perhaps, no offence, the owners are a bit older - i.e. maybe 60. It does have a bit of an 1980's feel about it. The kitchen is lovely. The dining room - cold and unwelcoming. As noted above, it needs carpet, pictures, something.
Yeah Texaninexile. I agree with you. I'm 64, read AT all the time, and know many folks many year younger than me whose decorating is downright dowdy.
Totally my fav AT post ever. Gorgeous!!!!!!
Beautiful. So very grand and everything is shiny and perfect. Bravo. My ony tip - upgrade the black chair in your bathroom. Maybe a great upholstered chair like the one in your entry way? Wonderful home.
I love this these spaces. I love the mix of Asian, English, and French antiques. The color scheme is a little too cool and neutral for me but otherwise a beautiful home. I would like to see more pops of color. Traditional design is wonderful because the designs have stood the test of time and the quality of the pieces is so much better than mass produced furniture. So much of modern is trendy, cheaply made and will quickly look dated. Give me an elegant Chippendale piece over a Eames design any day.
It's so nice to see different deco styles reflected on AT. I love your color scheme and the chinoiserie touches.
It is indeed grande- but it fits in with the ornate molding and those gorgeous herringbone floors. Not all is my style but I def. like it. Good job!
HA! I'm 55 and turned a bunch of 20 somethings onto this site, so there.
Anyway... I love this apartment. congrats. Love the use of mirrors, silver leaf, EVERYTHING.
Very beautiful and posh home. Love the use of chinoisserie and antiques. The architectural details are wonderful.
I am 33 and I LOVE the apt minus the silvery wall paper.
Although not my cup of tea stylistically, I hugely admire the commitment and perfectionism going on here. The owners obviously had a vision and pulled out all the stops realizing it, and kudos to them for that.
Somewhat OT, but what is it about tiles laid on the diagonal that makes me crazy?! I just despise it, no matter what the context. Probably just a personal peeve.
I'm not sure that I want guests to "put their feet up" when they come in my house. Please feel free to keep your feet off my furniture, unless it's an ottoman, and then take your shoes off.
The look as a whole isn't to my style, but there are elements I've definitely incorporated. I'm a sucker for Louis XIV chair legs.
That bathroom is amazing! Like something out of Alice in Wonderland. And the dining room reminds me of "Inception."
W O W !!!!!!
Really impressive!!! For a couple of guys with a clear sense of what grandeur is....they are showing an incredible degree of restraint to make their space magical and fresh and livable.
I'm a strong believer of more is more and these guys really show they are true magicians at walking that fine line.
For what I saw here... I know they don't mind at all about people getting "really" comfortable anywhere around the house.... If you look closely, they just have the exact necessary elements (really luxurious, nonetheless), to live by their needs. There is nothing "just there to look pretty".
.... and now, in other local news: Hehehehehe... so funny someone pointed out the plastic planter...someone was in a hurry when editing this post!!
i could spend the rest of my life snuggled in that red sofa nook with my lifetime reading list and a few cases of wine strategically stashed in those end cabinets.
Wow, this is stunning! I've always wanted to silver leaf a ceiling. *sigh*
And I'm just adding that it's totally not what I would do in a space, but that said, I think it's very nicely done. Fancy!
Thank you AT for having the floor plans. May you do this always!
Mostly, I love it... especially the stairway and the kitchen. Its hard to say why precisely, but it seems to lack humor, takes itself very seriously. But kudos to the owners and to AT for the variety!
I love the space and it almost needs to be published on Elle's interiors one...
A few things that are annoying me are the green plant pot in the first picture, it looks sorry, it might be the picture.
And in the kitchen, please do tell me that you are saving for a good oven. You have spent a fortune for a good kitchen and skimped on the stove? Unless you do not cook at all, which might be alright, but I would LOVE to see a white bertazzoni or smth like that. LOVE LOVE the white kitchen and how well the space is maximized.
It seems like you know how to live and hope you enjoy and have great memories in this space for years to come.
Looks nice, pretty and pristine.....but something about this style reminds me of my parent's house.
I could live there...easy...and it does say "come in, make yourself at home"
Pretentious? Yes...but no. The feel I get from from this (IMO of course) is Parisian via Boston, Mass. Would I live there? NO. Not to my taste, but I love the grand scale, the details and finishes. The place actually seems kinda fun to me, like it doesn't take itself to seriously.
I like it but it's so fancy. I would feel the need to dress for breakfast there.
Breathtaking! Funny how many people see this as very traditional - I think it is very up-to-date. The color scheme, with its light greys-blues-silvers-beiges, is nothing our grandomothers would do. The abundance of lighting and the mix of patterns is also very fresh. Yes, there are a lot of mirrors and chandeliers, which is very baroque, but they look different with all this light. I also love the fact that they went for something so beautiful, but not cosy, at least for the formal spaces. It's wonderful to dress nicely and be surrounded by beautiful things, at least to enjoy a drink. The rest of the time, you can wear sweatpants and cuddle with your dog on the red sofa :)
I like it. It's nothing my mid-50s parents would have - they would say its "too formal and untouchable." I can hear my mother (the natural-wood burled table hippie) saying "well... its... striking, isn't it?"
I love it though.
I love the chinoserie and the light colours and architectural detailing and crown molding and floors. To me, I don't really want people to come in and put their feet up (they can do that at my mom's house!) I want my home to be a bit special and a bit of a destination in its own right.
I think it is gorgeous!!!!... I love love love it ...
but ... how practicall exactly is it? I have to agree with previous commenter: where can i relax, put my feet up, feel free... and ... oh, god forbid, kids....
Obviously this couple don't have kids even remotely close to their life... and "unfortunately" most people do have kids so when designing interiors it has to be taken into consideration ...
But still... LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT ...
may be in another life i'll have something like that? :)))
It is all very Grand Dame', but in a good way.
It's absolutely awesome and a welcome change to the slew of Mid-Century modern tours or the bland carpeted condos with West Elm furniture we see on AT all the time.
It's beautiful, and it's different from what is usually posted here. it's not exactly my style, or my colors, but i still feel i could easily spend hours there. it inspires you.
Wow. That bathroom is amazing! Just gorgeous overall.
Wheeee, I love most of the photos here. Those ceilings are to die for. Fabulous place for a cocktail party. Invite everyone over in their best vintage wear and cue up Ken Burns' 'Prohibition' on the TV.
And I have developed a love for graphic wallpaper, so that pulls me in, too.
Funny how there's so much white and silver but then that one room has the red sofa and the red gingham. I don't know what to make of that.
And I'm guessing the owners do not have kids or pets, but I could be wrong. A lot of my buying and decorating decisions have been based on what can stand up to 2 cats (and I've sometimes guessed wrong on that score, with my polished desk surface and some other surfaces having the scratches to show for it. Next time around, I'll probably buy or scavenge more weathered or distressed wood! LOL)
That powder room is nothing short of stunning. It's gratifying to see a lavish, even over-the-top look done with such confidence and elan.
good lordie, this place is incredible. lahvvvvv it.
Wow. This House Tour has made me want to foresake my style and aspire to a new level of palatialness.
One of my guilty pleasures as a Cantabridgian is to cross the river and take a stroll down Commonwealth Ave (in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston) during the gloaming and try to get a glimpse of the inside of those gorgeous brownstones. I always imagined that the interiors would be grand and magical like the one on this tour. Thanks for scratching that itch AT!
The shadow cast by the light in the first picture is so lovely.
It is a beautiful home, but, 1800 sq ft and only one bedroom.
Beautiful. I'd like to peer inside more Back Bay homes.
I'm a little conflicted over this Open House- I *want* to love it, after all, it has the elements that usually make me swoon- from the Chinoiserie walls to the Louis furniture- but it's coming across as cold and pretentious.
Ooooh la la!
Just stepped back in time to my stepmom's place in Recoleta, Capital Federal.
Nice, but stuffy. Like 'them' people.
I could never live here because I'd be afraid to break the furniture or spill something haha
That being said, it's really beautiful! Like a museum :) I love AT's normal stuff, but it's nice to see something very different. I especially like the kitchen, bathrooms and wallpaper.
I am in love with this space. It is exactly what I would want for myself. Wow, wow and again...wow! It is so beautiful.
Gorgeous! Looks quite spendy. If I had this kind of money, I'd have this kind of look only in a small pied-a-terre in Paris or New York and keep my main living space more relaxed. Living in a place like this full-time I think I would always feel as though I ought to be wearing my pearls.
Kinda funny how all the negative comments seem to have been deleted? I swear there were some yesterday...and now it's all very nice. Hmmmm, is this perchance the editor's mom's house?
Outstanding! The use of reflected light as a design element is simply beautiful. The wall treatments and mouldings are stunning and I hope to see more Scalamandré fabrics featured in AT home tours. I love the little personal touches like the basket of chew toys and how the powder-room sink mimics a tastevin. However, I'm curious. Were those gorgeous marble mantles original to the home and if so, were they the basis for such a refined color scheme?
What an anomaly on a.t.! Wheres the eames lounge chair? Where is the painted block letter decor? I'm not even sure if this tour observes the 80/20 rule. lol!, I love it, and appreciate the particular elegance represented here.
Do the occupants every watch TV? I don't see one here, and I'd love to know how they'd place one.
The bathroom is my favorite, especially the basin. Would love to have the space to organize my closets the way they have.
ebanfield: I see a large flat screen TV over the fireplace in the room with the red couch.
The kitchen is nice.
I've definitely seen some of this style on the west coast in mansions of the 1950s. It's really nice to see non-plastic furniture and an absence of piles of stuff on the floors. Yes, it is the design of developing adults. You used to be able to stroll down Commonwealth Ave and see lighted upstairs windows, and peek at tops of libraries and fresco/mural-type ceilings. Hope it is still that way. There's a time a place for it all, and I'm off to Ikea for a dresser to tuck in with my Eastlake Oak - really.
I love your house. The architecture is stunning and you complimented it well with appropriate room dressing. One of my favorites is your ceiling in the dining room.
AT, kudos for show a different kind of house than you normally do. I enjoy viewing many different decorating styles.
And for those who think it's necessary to make snarky comments, remember the old adage, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all." It's impossible for AT to showcase a home that will please 100% of it's readers and it's unnecessary to make mean spirited comments.
Wow - very elegant. Makes my s. End abode look extra boho/non-adult!
Just one question: where is the cat? Every full AT tour I've seen has a cat somewhere in the photos. Could you not find one to go w/the decore? :)
shockingly elegant. I like the bedroom- it's looks peaceful- and the oil paintings in the heavy frames.
love it! AT...more tours like this please!
How wonderful. If I lived there I'd never want to leave it. You had me at the moulding, but the floors, the light, the colors, to die for. Great job.
Stunning!
Under resources....Oh my gosh....nothing from IKEA??? Or nothing mentioned ;) Don't get me wrong...I luv IKEA, just surprised when I saw the resource list.
A different house for sure. Done quite nice, not my overall cup of tea, but, different strokes. Thanks for showcasing it!
Hi, thank you for the House Tour, it was really interesting and inspiring. Can you let us know the colors (brand and color name) of the first living room and of the kitchen? I really really like them, I just hope they are not custom. thanks
Stunning and uniquely charming! Thanks for sharing!
dying inside with jealousy..... soooo lovely!
I have to give this the obligatory "ooh la la!"
I keep envisaging Nathan Lane in this apartment.
I think it's one of the most sumptuous apartments I've ever seen! Up until now I've never liked gray walls, but having seen this I'm converted! Gray seems to contribute to the overall silvery look. Fabulous!
While I can't imagine living there, I do love the kitchen and bedroom! I would love to visit for what would probably be amazing dinner parties, and the other rooms look to me like they'd be perfect to sit around and chat with friends.
I'd also like to say that the comments about it being old is simply because many of us grew up in homes with this kind of style because that's what our parents like. And we all know kids like to do the opposite of their parents.
I think it's fantastic. It has such a sense of grandeur. I think it's wonderful to have variety on AT. Even though it's not my personal style, it gives me ideas.
Beautiful!!! I would love to live here!!! And my favorite spot ... that book nook! Love, love, love!!!
I don't know if that is my style. what I really dislike is that fake brownstone brick siding people stick on exterior homes. at least you didn't need to do that.
If I had all the $$$ in the world, I do not want to travel through my closet to get to my bathroom!
