Fabric covered walls may fit neo-classical French palaces or nouveau-riche New York hotels, but with the help of the $1.00 Fabric Store in the Fashion District, you may be able to bring this kind of luxury to your very own new-millennium apartment.
Located in the Fashion District, the store has hundreds of fabrics, all sold at $1.00 a yard. At that price, you won’t find silk or cotton with a sky-high thread count; however, you will get some unusual patterns, eye-catching color combinations, and even some hot gold spangle that would look amazing used as pillow covers for your sofa.
The staff is very attentive and efficient. The one thing they’re not willing to do for you is bargain, however. There’s no need, given that what they charge everyday is a fraction of their competitors’ sale prices. The Fashion District is a wonderful place to go for interior design inspiration, and the $1.00 Fabric Store is where you can put your ideas into action.

Great post Anna...the Downtown Fashion District is an underappreciated resource and location that I love visiting not only for the wares sold there, but also for the energetic atmosphere.
Oh, and bacon wrapped sausages :)
This is good to know about, not only for home decor stuff (I have always wanted to cover some of my walls in splashy prints), but for all the arts and crafts projects I plan to do this summer while I sit inside with the A/C blasting on me. Thanks for the tip!
Oh, yes. The Fashion District (formerly the Garment District)! Love that area, especially Santee Alley for all the fake bling, cheap sunglasses and baseball caps. (Yeah, it's basically a big swapmeet, but gregory is right about the cool frenetic vibe of the place...) The fabric stores are really cool there, but frankly this place is new to me! Must check out one day soon... PS those bacon-wrapped hotdogs only taste good to me at 2:15am as I stumble out of club, waiting for a cab to arrive.
okay, anna. you are doing a really good job of getting me curious about LA and what's in store there. haven't been since i was 13 with big hair, and i think i need to learn about LA for grownups. can't wait for you to tell me more. must visit! these are really nice, photos too...
I have yet to make it out to L.A in that area...there have been several attempts, but for some reason I cannot find the area. I always get side tracked. I am currently in Orange County so getting there and back is a juggle with the traffic. Could you let me know the area, and maybe, just maybe I could try and succeed! thanks.

As an event planner I often have need for large quantities of things, like a bolt or 3 of fabric. I have shopped the Fashion District, Flower District, retail supply stores, restaurant supply and other stores in downtown Los Angeles. By the way, Little Tokyo has some great stores too. I recall a little general store that is like an old fashioned hardware supply with Japanese products for the home that are VERY COOL without wanting to be!
Since I have a planning gene (being an event planner & all) there are a few things might have been helpful in your post...
- Public transport options, if there are any
- Parking availability
- Hours that they are open
The hours is a big deal. Many of these places have weird hours. I Googled "$1.00 Fabric Store"+"los angeles" and did not get results. Since the name of the store is odd- it could get listed a dozen ways in electricic yellow pages.
Once you plan a trip down there, pay for parking... you want them to be open. If you know the hours, it would be great to follow up with this data.
Thanks for your comments, Samthecat! Here are some Fashion District specifics: There are some public transport options, outlined on the FD website: http://www.fashiondistrict.org/page.aspx?id=125. This page also gives driving directions for those coming in cars. As for parking, you can use one of the many lots and pay anywhere from $3 to $8, or you can park on
the street at a meter. I always have luck finding spots on San Pedro, which is on the edge of the district. In general, the business hours of the fashion district are 10 am to 5 pm Mon through Sat, with some stores open on Sunday. The $1.00 Fabric Store is open 10-5, seven days a week. Enjoy!
Remember that if you are covering a wall in fabric you should make sure the fabric is fire-rated for the purpose. Not having fire-rated fabric could allow an insurance company to invalidate a settlement.
Oh yeah Max, excellent point. When I worked for a big-name architecture firm here in L.A., vendors would come and show "educational" videos about their products so that they could sell stuff and so that the architects and designers could get continuing education credits. The videos of flame tests (on upholstered furniture, wall coverings, etc.) were always a hit!
re: bacon wrapped sausages - remember kids, NEVER EVER order them with mayo! I did and in return I got a lovely case of food poisoning.

Check out the tours of downtown los angeles. You can't get lost and you can find real bargains. It offers time to shop as well. I believe hollywood tours offers a good one. It covers the jewelry, fashion and other districts.
