The student exhibits at this year's ICFF clearly had a sustainable focus: students from the Rhode Island School of Design designed products from recyclable composites, while students from the University of Oregon explored the environmental impact of flat-packed furniture. But the most interesting and idealistic exhibit came from the collaboration between the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Washington...
The 100 Mile Design Challenge aimed to show that thoughtful, attractive design was possible using local materials found near Baltimore and Seattle. Nothing was off-limits, and materials used in the final prototypes included bamboo, clay, red oak, oyster shells, hemp, beeswax, charcoal and pine resin.
