A few years ago (before modern prefab became quite as popular in America as it is today), Dwell threw down a challenge: They asked 16 architects to design a modern prefab for $200,000. We weren't aware of it then, but we just came across the story this morning ...
The genesis of the design challenge really is the coolest story—as it was essentially designed to find an affordable, modern prefab home for an interested (and lucky!) couple in North Carolina. And when we say lucky, we mean lucky.
The winner of the challenge, Resolution: 4 Architecture, designed a modular home that was easily trucked to the site in pieces. Actually, "easily" probably isn't the best word to use. The building process was long and arduous, but the final result looks like it was worth it.
