• Cure Clock: 3 days till start
• Assignment: Buy or borrow the book!
Hi everyone! It's time to polish up our homes again, and just as we did last year I've completely re-tooled The Cure for busy schedules and working stiffs like us. It's going to be shorter, quicker and much more accessible. Check out the video above, and jump below for more info. We start next Monday morning, and it's going to be fun.
THE BOOK
This 20/20 Cure is adapted completely from The Eight-Step Home Cure, so please get yourself a copy if you don't have one already. While I'll give you a good deal of info for each project in my videos, the real dirt is in the book.
THE 20/20 CURE
Welcome to my NEW 20/20 Cure. In only 20 minutes a day for 20 days we're all going to make our homes beautiful, organized and healthy. This fall I'm making my original Home Cure shorter and more accessible so that everyone can do it and feel good about their home.
Want to do more during these four weeks? Go for it. The twenty projects in the 20/20 Cure are easy and powerful when added all together, but should you want to take on a bigger project, or tackle one room in its entirety, I'd love to see it.
Spoiler Alert: For this Cure I'm going to be running the same series of videos that we made last fall, so if you've never seen them - Enjoy! - and if you HAVE seen them already, it will be like watching re-runs of your favorite show. :-)
HOW IT WORKS
The Day's Video - Each day I'll be giving you a project from the book via a short video (oooh, gasp!). I'll post the assignment at 7:45 est each day, so you know what's on tap. For more information on each project, I'll direct you to the chapter in the book where you can read in more detail if you wish.
The Day's Email - Each day's video link will also be sent out via email simultaneously as its broadcast across four of our sites (Sara Kate is doing a special cooking Cure on The Kitchn).
Share Your Cure - As you check off each day, let us know how you're doing. Ask questions and discuss your Cure in the daily discussion thread. Tweet and Facebook your progress, and share your pics in our 20/20 Cure Flickr Group. Before you know it, you'll be done and amazed with what you've accomplished.

Shaw's Original Fir...
YES! i JUST moved, and have been bemoaning my lack of direction. when oh when! will the home cure start, i asked... huzzah!
I wonder if I could convince BF to do this. His house has so much potential.
Great idea! My place in the city is in serious need of "the cure" -- and this timing is so great vis-a-vis our busy schedules. Pure genius, Maxwell!
my os is too outdated for flash10 and i lack the ram to get current. maybe i can watch the videos at work.
Great! I just started the book (and just moved), so this is perfect timing. I'm so there!
Yay! I have been waiting for this.
I did the spring cure shortly after we moved and I loved it. Now we have been in our house for almost a year and I am ready to make some changes.
Awesome!
Oh good! I attempted the last spring cure after I'd just moved into a new place. Now I've lived here long enough that there is clutter and messes lurking... time to tackle them.
Perfect timing, my new place is not fit to see the light of day, and I won't be moving in until it is in much better shape. I have changed two knobs on the kitchen cupboard doors, can I count that for next week?.
Just moved to my new house, so much to do, I am in!
Oh man, it would have been fun (if cleaning can really BE fun) to do this with you guys! However, I just completed my own mini version of "the cure" yesterday, as far as de-cluttering room by room, top to bottom cleaning and sprucing the place up a bit. It took apprx. two weeks. Well, I could participate in buying the flowers at least, so all is not lost! By the way, can I just mention how good it feels to get rid of stuff? *exhale*
Sounds great, I'm all excited now! And so IN too!
Well, even if my home is still under very heavy renovation, I'm going to join in anyway.
I don't know if you need another person saying how much she enjoyed the book, but anyway, here it is. I bought the book in June, and it made me think about two things: how I'm always overpacked instead of prepared, and how I keep books and books I never read, but keep because they are great editions of classics.
As a result, this summer, we travelled with our then 6-months old son, with only one suitcase for three (and not a big one), and his stroller. I ended up not needing all those things parents are supposed to bring along and we spend the best vacations !
As I came home, I gave away to friends about 50% of my books (I sent a list of what I wanted to give away, and they chose the ones they wanted). The rest I will give to my old high school, since they are great philosophical books. I will only keep about a hundred books, but they are the ones I cannot part with.
The only thing that made me laugh is the "cooking" part. I'm French, so eating out is not (yet) something you do every night. As a matter of fact, I cook every night, except on festive occasions (and even then... I'm a fair cook), so it was fun to think "at least, there's ONE section I can skip because I'm good at it !".
So, thank you for making me think about things I always took for granted. It's been fun emptying our house (husband is beginning to feel it too !), and I love living in it even more than I did before.
Will there be re-caps or the information in the Videos? I dont watch videos at work, and I usually try not to go on the computer when I go home unless I have to.
I hate to be a downer, but I will probably not participate if we have to watch a video to get the program.
Thanks!
I'm excited to begin! This format feels so doable.
OK, ready, set, go! 20 minutes is definitely cool for someone with a low attention span. It's almost summer here in BUenos Aires, so this'll be good to greet the new (hot and muggy) season!
I am SO looking forward to this. As it is, after years of procrastination, I've been decluttering and purging for the last few weeks. I really appreciate this opportunity coming at such a convenient time! Count me in!
Can't Wait!
Oh, I need this so badly!
I've been trying to do the whole "clean/organize one thing a day" and it's worked a little bit, but without a list to work from, I get off track easily.
And life is too busy for the hardcore 8 week Cure (unfortunately). I'm so glad you switched up the format, Maxwell! I can't wait for Monday!
So excited for this! 20 min a day just seems much more likely to happen!
For those of us who already cook every night, could there maybe be an alternative thing to do on those days?
THANK you!! I am excited. When I tried the 8wk Cure before, I got behind from the start and had to withdraw. I feel enthusiastic, optimistic, encouraged and ready to begin The 20/20 Cure! Thank you Maxwell!
Can't wait!
Yes! Love the variety of the daily to-do's. I might take longer than 20 min on some of them...like #20.
I have mixed feelings about this new format.
I understand 20 min a day for 20 days is a lot easier and more doable for most people, which is its appeal. But you can't get any of the big changes accomplished, which is what I think really makes The Cure special and unique.
And I'm kind of disappointed that we won't be seeing any of the dramatic makeovers the came along with the full 8 wk Cure. I know that I can still do it on my own, but its just not the same.
I might think of this as the "during baby's naptime cure." :D
C'est tres magnifique! I attempted (ahem) last winter's cure and it was overwhelming in the scheme of life at that time. This 20/20 is perfect!! Looking forward to it ...
Wonderful! I'm in the process of getting my place together and my enthusiasm is starting to wane. The timing is impeccable. Can't wait to go through the 20/20 cure.
Great! I was waiting for the fall cure and this will be much easier
I didn't make much progress on the Spring Cure and I'm a lot more optimistic about this.
oooh oooh ooh! I SWEAR I'm going to do this this time!!!
Is buying the book really necessary? Can I get enough out of the process without it?
I love flowers, but that's a heck of a lot of flowers... can I just put some leafs in a vase? :P
I like the new 20/20 format! I agree with some other people that the 8 week cures are still really special and cool to see, but maybe you could do that format once a year and this format once a year (spring and fall)? I'm really excited to participate in this shorter version!
I made a great deal of improvement in the Spring cure, and I wish I could do it again, but I'm moving early next month. I'll do a home cure on my own once I'm moved in, for sure! Good luck, everyone!
Any chance you'll put out videos that will play on the iPhone? Otherwise I (and anyone else on an iPhone) won't be able to see it.
Where do we sign up? I found the link for the kitchen one, but not the home one.
So very exciting! I signed up for the kitchen cure as well, I hope I can handle it :)
I'm excited for something manageable but like others, I like the idea of doing some bigger, more dramatic projects so I may schedule those for myself along with the 20 minutes a day. I'm a little disappointed there is no section on the bedroom but maybe I'm mistaken? That was one of my favorite parts of the Spring Cure bc it really is a "special" room and my favorite in my house. +1 to videoes made for iphones or those without adobe reader. Also, I didn't see an actual spot to sign up... or will that pop up on Monday?
Anyways, very excited nonetheless! Good luck all!
Wooohooo! Just 20 minutes... We can do that! You've got us excited Maxwell...
I'm in. I have a new condo that needs 20 minutes a day. Can't wait!
Fantastic! Even I should be able to squeeze in 20 minutes a day!
I ordered my book and I'm ready to go - - need to toss a lot of junk from my bedroom. Maybe this will help. I'm a child of a hoarder so I makes it a bit difficult - - my only consolation is that my room doesn't even look close to those on the TV show. YIKES!
Thanks Maxwell!!
I'm so excited. I have the book, read it over one wkend. This is that extra push I needed. Thanks AT!!!
I'm working 65 hours a week over the next month (+ daily commuting time of 2.5 hours per each of six days), so even this may be too much. HOWEVER, I think this sounds really exciting. I may just have to bookmark all of these so I can go back and do at a later date what I can't get to now.
I think this is a great idea.
Aw, couldn't you have waited a month? Thats when I should be in a new place. Anyways, totally excited about this new format. I always liked the intense version of the cure but always fell behind by week 2, maybe this one will work better. I am however, not so excited about the fact that Maxwell apparently sounds (and kinda looks) like an ex-boyfriend of mine. :\
Yet again I won't be able to complete it all. House guests for one week and on holiday for another week during the 20 days, but I would like to take part anyway and see what I can get on with.
my apartment is really small, so I'm constantly making improvements and attempting to un-clutter... this 20/20 looks fun and i'm going to give it a try... but all the flower suggestions make me laugh... i only have 3 rooms and usually one big bouquet do it for a week!
vintagepearl - just move the one bouquet around to each room as you video. Most people do not have three eames chairs for every room.
I like the 20/20 idea. My house is pretty neat and tidy and organized but this will be a way of jump-starting preparation for the holidays in a fun format. Great idea--thanks!
excellent! i love the new format.
I'm looking forward to 20/20 Cure. I struggled to find time with The Cure and felt guilty when I didn't complete the tasks.
What I like about the usual Cure format is that you have a whole week to get everything done! How are we supposed to make time EVERY DAY? I know it's only 20 minutes, but it seems like if you fall behind two days because of being busy or having a migraine (ahem), there'll be no room to catch up--since the assignments will just pile up on each other. Also, WHY are the Home Cures and Kitchen Cures at the same time? I'm very disappointed in this new format.
I'm excited for this, and I totally signed up. But... how does this translate to "One Room Remedy"? I still have an unfurnished room in my apartment that I was saving for last.. Perhaps I will work through the cure on my own.
I'm ready to try the new format. I've done the full Cure more than once, but I've also started and been derailed more than once because something inevitably comes up--work, travel--so that I feel like I feel like I just don't have the time to do it right. I'm ready to try this more realistic version for all us super busies. I'm also looking forward to the weekly video of Maxwell!
The list on the Cure page is different from the one you've listed here. Which is the official one?
In any case, neither list fits my lifestyle just right, so I've made a few adaptations just for me (based on the list from the Cure page). Figured I'd share, in case my ideas help anyone else. :)

Oops, the code didn't work. Still, it should be easy to tell what I'm crossing off and what I've replaced it with. :)
I'm excited about the new format too. I was longing to do the Cure this fall (had wonderful success last fall including compete redecoration of my bedroom, and every single day I love my dove grey walls!). But between a new job and taking college classes for the first time (at 33!) I didn't see how I could possibly fit it in. This 20 minutes a day plan sounds ideal, and lets me play along!
Ms. Mack, I really like your substitution of candles for flowers. I will still do flowers at least once but lighting candles and actually sitting to enjoy them sounds divine. :-)
Looking forward to working with you all for the next 20 (or so) days.
I am so in! This is the year I take back the house. (From the kids!) I attempted it last year, and got rid of the "baby" stuff via a yard sale, Good Will and donating items to people in need. Since both of our children are in school now, one is in 1/2 day kindergarten- I have a few hours to get things done. I will be getting rid of toys that are too young this week.
Our home is also under renovation, so I will be battling sawdust, but any step in the right direction is so worth it!
Is the One Room Remedy going to be covered?
Bite-size pieces. I love this idea!
Is anyone else having trouble with the PDF Calendar? I have tried on three separate computers and am unable to to download it.
I love the home cure, only you always do it in November (which I understand Fall in all) but I'm always involved in NaNoWriMo during November. Le sigh. One of these years I'll be able to do the Fall cure!
I did the Spring Cure and it really helped me focus while I was settling into my new apartment. I look forward to the 20/20 Cure to fine-tune and maybe do a one-room cure on my bedroom--the one room that still feels not-together. It's very dark--because I'm on the third floor of six and it's tucked back into a recess of the building--and I am NOT a "cave" person! So I bought a quart of Martha Stewart paint in Sea Anemone to try on one wall to see how I like it. I also need to mix up the furniture and maybe sell an antique or two...trying for a balance of modern with rustic.
I like the idea of a full Cure once a year and a shorter-lighter version in the other season.
I just wanted to let Mrs. Mack know how much I like her substitutions. I've had me eye on some houseplants I may have enough sun to grow, but I've never been a big cut flower fan.
I'll likely try incense instead of a candle though. Good luck to all!
I'm so excited to start the 20/20 Cure! Good luck to everyone and thank you to Apartment Therapy for their great tips and program. Here's my blog post with my Day 1 results: http://bit.ly/biSebE
I'm late, I just seen this post on my email. I hope that it won't be a problem and I can still participate.
I can't wait. I have made my list and checked it twice. I just need a push to get started.
I've been waiting for this. My house needs it!
It was a little fast paced for me last year, but I'm hoping I'll be able to keep up better now that my youngest isn't quite so young.
The book may be available at your local public library.
I read the book and like it so much I kept it. I'll try to keep up with the cure this time. It seems fun.
Finally!
I can't wait for #19. I might go ahead and start...
For dear life I'm in. Just ordered the book and it'll be here on Tuesday (thank you, Amazon Prime). This is just what I need to get in gear right now.
Very, very, very happy to see the Cure back again, although I admit being a little disappointed to expect reruns. I was looking forward to some new ones, the old ones were so much fun !
I decided to start both the 20/20 cure and the Eight-step cure. I have plenty of time, and my home need it. The 20/20 cure is a good thing for maintenance, but I'm in need of much more right now. So, let's have the best of both world and do two cures at the same time.
On board from JA! Need to get rid of clothes, linens, and dust. Excited to work with everyone.
Best,
Here we go again!
what Loora said!!
Your timing is perfect. This is just what I need. I can manage 20 days!
I did the cure a couple of times and it really help me to make a home for me. Right now I feel like a have home bit would like to change some things. My pad allready works for me but it got a little bit stale so I would like to move things again to get some new flow. I am allready doing some sort of 10 minutes every day to keep my pad in an ok shape so the 20 minutes more will really make a difference.
I'm signing up for this--I just moved and the whole place could use a lot of work.
Was there a Spring Cure this year? I was looking for it, but must have missed it. I only found AT a year or so ago, and haven't seen the full cure since then. Will there be one in the future?
I miss the full cure. I don't have time every day, but I can make blocks of time every week. So sad. i did the 20/20 last time it was on, but I didn't feel the community, or see the same shazam as with the full cure. Will it come back? Please say yes!
My life has been out of control hence my house is out of control...I can't wait to start!
Love this idea! I'm totally down (though I'm going to be out of town for a bit in the middle, so I guess I'll just have to do it on my own schedule) I'm looking forward to a "cured" home cause boy does my place need help!
I'm in!
I'm in as well! I'm glad I saw this today and can start with everyone else. Now I just need to decide between the living room/dining room and the bedroom. Both are in dire need of help!
OK - I haven't read the book, but please. There is no way that list is going to get your house clean. How is buying flowers or taking a bath getting my house clean ( I do think that if you want to do those things, go for it) but treating myself is a totally separate thing. If you want to get organized or learn to keep your house clean - go to flylady.com ( and then go buy flowers and take a bath ;))
Each to their own xoxo...flylady didn't work for me. Maxwell's cure is a great kickstart that gets you doing things when you are feeling a bit stale round the home.
Need I say....I'm in as well! :)
Okay...I must be blind, but I don't see where to sign up...?
Nevermind...found it! Off to clean the bedroom...
Oh boooo. I am moving out of my apartment and back in with my boyfriend NEXT week and can't work along with you guys :(
I tried our local library. They have an older home therapy book by you, and according to the library catalog, it is shelved in the library system's Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library. I love libraries!
