The best part of quickly developing technology is finding new ways to play with it, and every new iPhone release boasting new, cool features means lots of new, cool games. These four games, which take advantage of unique tech, design or methods of interactivity, are at the top of the heap.
Today I Die Again ($.99)
Why It's Cool: Game as art.
More interactive art than game, Today I Die Again is a lovely merging of graphics, typography, interactive play and expression. The game drops you in with no instructions or guidelines, and figuring out what to do (and how) is just as much a part of the game as the results of your actions.
Papa Sangre ($4.99)
Why It's Cool: Navigate the game world using only audio.
The first game to utilize binaural audio, Papa Sangre chucks you into a world of complete darkness, with only your ears and fingertips to move and guide you around a series of perils. It's fascinating how quickly you drop the need for sight as you adjust to using only your auditory senses.
The Heist ($.99)
Why It's Cool: Not your ordinary puzzle game.
Players crack a safe with four puzzle types and 60 levels; users who finish every level will receive a prize in return. Innovative for replicating the MacHeist site's group unlocking activity in iPhone game form, and parts of the game's story hijack your phone's utilities in interesting ways.
Flip It! Gyro ($.99)
Why It's Cool: Utilizes iPhone 4's internal gyroscope for gameplay.
Players use the iPhone 4 like a contemporary game of Bop It, flipping and shaking the phone to a series of shouted-out commands. Multiple modes mean more than one person can take advantage (or not) of their quick reflexes, or beat their own best scores. (Full disclosure: this game was created by this author's husband.)
