I'm 25 years old and live in Belgium with my boyfriend in a 100m² apartment in the lovely old city of Ghent. We've been living here for over 5 years. Because the weather has been lovely for over a month now (and it promises to be a very nice summer) we decided to create a small outdoor retreat.
We had a tiny terrace for garbage and cleaning tools, some spare paint, the willingness to spend about 70 euro and a free weekend. So we thought it through, bought some wood and plants and spent a day and a half doing some painting and handywork.
We managed to get it all very sturdy using heavy hinges and heavy duty shelf supports from the hardware store. Everything folds flat to the wall, so we can easily reach our recycling I've managed to get into the square meter behind the black little fence - using shelving. (Luckily we also have a garage downstairs, so we can always store some garbage there if needed).
It's tiny, it's ridiculous, it's a hassle to get stuff from inside once you're comfy, but it's lovely. It seats up to 3 people, catches direct sunlight from 3pm, and stays sunny the whole evening. Ideal for breakfast, coffee after work, light meals, late drinks or even some writing or reading. We're so happy to be able to just step outside so easily now. And so is Cartouche, our indoor cat.
Thanks, Arnod!

Shaw's Original Fir...
J'adore!!
Ingenious - I love it!
Your little balcony is really lovely. My cats are envious of Cartouche. :)
WOW!!!! Let me be the first to say "This is such an incredible use of space! I am truly inspired."
I am also jealous of your sweet kitty cat that she can spend all day lounging around on that little patio. If you could train her to scoot into the apartment to fetch cold drinks & snacks you wouldn't have to worry about getting up again "once you're comfy".
I love this patio & plan to try something like this as soon as I get settled into my new 20 x 20 flat- I know this idea will work for indoor areas as well as outdoor.
Thank you, Arnod, for sharing this.
Very lovely! Thank you so much for the detailed photos of how things fold. Cartouche is so charming, a great spokesmodel for the before-and-after version!
What a wonderful spot! Congratulations, & enjoy!!
So clever and beautiful! The plants are beautifully arranged and I love how happy Cartouche is! I love how kitties think every improvement is especially for them.
There is this GREEN (with jealousy) person walking around Toronto -- it is ME. I am jealous of your brill idea and execution. WOW it is amazingly clever and effective... GREEN with envy!!
How many of us just had to click on this to see more of cartouche? **raises hand**
I can see why you think it's a hassle and why you think it's totally worth it. Very ingenius use of a teeny tiny space, well done. The next question is paint or no paint?
Great job! The space is lovely and so is Cartouche.
Love!
very clever indeed!
smart and beautiful!
So sensible...I just love it. Almost as much as Cartouche seems to.
Such a clever idea! Looks like fun.
Nice project, but what's with the gratuitous shirtless photo? Not that you don't have a nice body and all, but really?
Ahem, AmandainAustin... no ruining the fun for the rest of us, if you please! :L
I'd love to have seen a final shot with 3 balconests crammed in as described, just for a notion!
"Nice project, but what's with the gratuitous shirtless photo?"
I'm going with this being a "just woke up and am having morning brunch" shot. Or just bragging about the fact that he doesn't have to worry about a "No shirt, no shoes, no service" policy on his terrace. Either way, it's all good.
Amanda, you're joking, aren't you???
All in one photo: the gorgeous transformation of a tiny space, a lovely sweet cat and a guy's nice body: what more could you want? ;-)
Clever and beautiful. Amzing job. Just one question: Are you not afraid that adorable Cartouche might go for a dive?
such great use of the space. very inspiring!
Oh my gosh. That is too cute. I love your creativity and use of a small space.
That's ingenious! Also, I'm jealous of the view. I need to move somewhere pretty. Sigh.
This is just so smart!
I like your balcony.
I love your cat. :D
absolutely brillant. J'aime le petit chat, le corps de l'homme et la terrase.
Way to go guys! Great job!!! This is exactly the type of post I LOVE seeing on AT. Clever and really adaptable idea! Plus, what a pretty kitty!
Amanda, some of us want the gratuitous shirtless photo every once in a while, we see enough hipsters and girls in sundresses on here, we deserve a shirtless Belgian now and then. But def an awesome use of space, couldnt imagine how you could have used it better!
the most amazing transformation I've ever seen! I love the fold down tables and the versatility it adds.
Love the cat, and love the casual it's-my-house-and-I'll-wear-or-not-wear-whatever-I-want look
Slim opgelost!
well done!
groeten vanuit Mechelen
Stunning! If you nurture your plants as you have your kitty, the kitty will have a lovely jungle to explore.
"I'd love to have seen a final shot with 3 balconests crammed in as described..."
... all shirtless, please!!!
Fantastic balcony transformation, by the way.
This is a lovely space. It's amazing what you can do with such a small area. I would love to sit out there with my cat Charlotte!
I think you treat/stain/polish the wood.
I'm with peahen....just heard of a friend's cat who broke her leg falling from the balcony! A catio is a great idea.
I love it, what a good idea!
this is brilliant! i want to come over and sit on the patio!
Heel mooi opgelost
Groeten uit W-VL!
ingenious! defiant! what a smart little space.
just make sure cartouche doesn't take a dive after one of those birdies he's so intently watching! :)
fabulous job on what many would pass off as a useless space.
Brilliant!!!
Great idea! Loved it! I see that the cat loves it too. :)
I love it - its just lovely...and your cat is gorgeous!!
