Last week we shared the tales of two friends who had their iPhones stolen (one swiped out of their hands). We've also shared some tips of what to do once a smartphone is stolen. But the best possible situation is not to have your portable device targeted at all, and one could reduce the chances by simply disguising your smartphone or tablet in less conspicuous garb...
Pad & Quill has updated their line of handsome book-style covers, now for both the iPad 2 and the recently competitor from Amazon, the Kindle Fire. These covers are all handmade here in the USA (Minneapolis to be exact), and are constructing with a bookbinding technique with Italian leather which should result in a pretty convincing book cover disguise.
So you might be reading an e-book while waiting to board an airplane or while on public transportation, but at quick glance you'll appear to be reading an old fashioned book. Because the last time we checked, nobody was swiping printed matter out of people's hands.

dodocase and bookbook have been doing this for awhile now and their products beat the pants off pad n quill. This post looks like a advertisement.
hunter606: to be fair we've posted about dodocase and bookbook on numerous occasions, any which could work equally as well as Pad & Quill's line in disguising portable devices. Personally don't own or use any of them, but still think it's great these are handmade with real leather by a local company.
gregory: sorry you took what was just a statement of opinion as some kind of troll...I love the dodocase because it is carved from bamboo and finished like a book bound piece of furniture. I love the Bookbook (i own 2) because it is an amazing handcrafted piece of art. Both are superior products to the Pad n Quill. (Plastic and cardboard with contact paper) Just saying..Its an opinion.
I've no experience with the Pad+Quill cases (they didn't make the style I liked for the original iPad), but I have a Dodocase. It's beautiful, but the bamboo has not held up well over the past year. It's taken 2 short tumbles off my nightstand (thank you, cats!) and each time the bamboo has cracked and broken. I've re-glued it each time, and I have had to re-glue the rubber corners too many times to count.
I recently got a case from RookCase, and while the exterior isn't as nice as Dodo, the interior frame is much sturdier.
Hmm, maybe Unpluggd should do a comparison of the book-style cases out there?
hunter606 -- perhaps you are thinking of a different pad and quill? These cases are certainly not "plastic and cardboard with contact paper." On the contrary, the frames are birch, and the covers are bonded leather.
My mom takes her ipad around everywhere in a pad and quill case and has had it dropped, stepped on, thrown around the car, and both the ipad and case still look like new.
madameme- I stand corrected. This forum has done a great job highlighting the other choices lately. I am biased to support the one I have. When i broke the zipper due to my own clumsiness twelve south replaced my bookbook free of charge and no trouble at all. So I think they have earned my loyalty.
