My mom just got an iPad that she uses to read books online and I can't help but think how truly great that is! So it got me thinking what I should get the rest of my family.

The most wonderful gift you can give a bookworm is a gift-card stuffed with money to buy books. Ever since my brother started giving me one every year for Christmas, it's become one of my favorite, most exciting gifts to get.
Some people think giftcards are a little cold, but when it's something the recipient really loves... giving me a book-gift-card is like taking a ten year old into a candy store and saying "Here's $30, you don't have to save the money for later, just go buy all the candy you want now!"
Ah, it is the best.
Hear, hear to that one above! I can only quote a poster I saw at a Denver bookstore "Books need people, not batteries."
My girl is getting me a Kindle for Christmas, and I couldn't be happier. I love my books -- save for the bathroom, every room in my house has a bookcase -- but I like the convenience of an e-reader, especially since I now take public transportation to work. (I just don't want to haul an 800-page book in my backpack. Too heavy!) Getting a Kindle doesn't mean I'll never buy another book (or audio book, which I also enjoy), it's just another way for me to engage in an activity I've always loved.
I totally agree about the gift card! They are the best!
A word of caution about the Kindle though. You will not be able to download books from your library. As a librarian, that immediately turned me away from the Kindle. I'm considering a Nook.
Earlier this year I set out the goal to buy less physical new books, except for art/design or gifted copies (damn you, Taschen!), while purchasing/trading for more used copies and downloading digital formats via the Kindle store when available. It's worked out well, balancing my love of reading while also keeping the clutter at bay in our modest sized apartment. That being said, we're making renovations and additions to our rental specifically for the books we love, but now realize treasuring things isn't so important as sharing them (we've found new homes amongst friends for some of the books we weren't reading).
I'll always love books, but I'm also enjoying reading on my iPad more and more. Books will always have a place in this world, but what we define as a "book" will likely change dramatically in the next decade and I welcome living with less physical things when possible.
The one thing that keeps me from getting into some sort of ereader is that I rarely buy books, I love to go to the library and browse the shelves and then actually crack open a book and read.
