It's no secret that grey has become one of the most popular neutrals over the last couple of years. It's got a little more warmth than white, but it isn't in your face like a bright color. Plus, colors like turquoise look great against it. But, as we've found out first hand, it can be difficult to find the right shade.
We recently painted our new dining room what we thought was grey, but ended up being a very bright light blue. So after a few more failed attempts we finally hit on a shade we can live with. In the process we hit upon a great article all about grey on colour me happy that explains that gray has three undertones: it's either blue, green or purple so if you see a bit of one of those colors in the swatch or chip, magnify that by a lot to get a sense of what it will look like all over the walls.
Our other tip? Paint swatches on the walls. We got cocky and thought we didn't need to and paid for it.
To save you some anguish, here are some proven greys:
• Farrow & Ball's Pavillion Grey
•Stone 04 from Yolo Colorhouse. (It is greeny grey and lovely.)
•Gray Owl from Benjamin Moore (A pretty true light grey)
•Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore (this one veers on taupe)
•Stone Harbor from Benjamin Moore (that's what's in that last picture of our in process dining room)
Do you have a grey that worked out well for you?

Shaw's Original Fir...
We have three grays in our place, all by Benjamin Moore - Shadow Gray, Whitestone, and Bleached Shadow.
Love em all!
We used Revere Pewter in our kitchen and we love it! It's nice and warm without veering into beige. Apparently this is the only photo I have of it:

We just painted our tiny bathroom gray cloud. Now I'm have trouble finding a shower curtain, rug, etc. in a shade of gray for the bathroom. Our shower stall is white tile and the shower pan is gray and white marble.
I'm looking for a light gray with purple undertones, any suggestions?
Benjamin Moore Angelica from the Aura Affinity line is one to look into, quinnley.
Valspar's Gravity worked out well in my living room. It's light and just a touch blue, and looks great with bright white trim.

We're really happy with Wolf's Run by True Value in our bedroom:

It's a cool grey that works really well with the daylight we get. I wouldn't say that it's the definitive "best" grey, but we love the results we got in this particular space.
Quinnley, look into Valspar's Comet Dust.
fresh300 - I would go with white or a bright color in your bathroom.
In the last issue of Domino there was a room mostly painted white except for the ceiling which was grey. It was almost not noticeable but still had a nice effect once you did.
Also that last pic has to be the worst picture I've ever seen on AT.
We've used Behr's Dolphin Fin and really love it. It's actually in the yellow-toned neutral category. But it's a really clean, clear gray. We painted our office this color--it gets a ton of natural light--and we plan to use it in our living and dining rooms as well. For our dark bedroom and hallway, we went with Irish Mist, the lightest version of the color and, while we like it, it is almost too pale for me during the day, but at night it's cozy and still airy.
I do love the gray trend. It is so calming.
Quinnley, also try Glidden's Dolphin Grey. I just painted my bedroom with it and love the purple undertones. They show up well in daylight, but at night the walls are definitely grey. They also have a Lavender Cloud that is a little lighter.
I used Behr's Light French Gray in my living room and love it. It veers very light blue in bright light and is a lovely light gray at night. Both tones look good with my teal and orange accessories..

Thunder, a BM Affinity color that's in my bedroom. Tried a bunch of different grays before hitting on this. It's soft and velvety and warm and perfect.
I used Valspar's Hazy Stratus in my living room. I started with the Gravity that lisO showed but it was too blue. The Hazy Stratus is a great grey and looks pretty with my stark white trim.
Thank goodness for gray! I hate neutrals like beige and my husband hates color. Behr Porpoise was our compromise. We liked it so much we extended it from the bath to the entire hall (Scroll down to the after shots):

Ah but travislessness, there's a story behind that picture!
I'm about to go with Mythic's "Antique Pewter" ... we'll see how blue it gets, I guess?
I had good luck with Sherwin Williams' Repose Gray. It's light and airy with a bit of warmth. I love it and we were lucky to nail it on the first try!
I second Behr's Dolphin Fin.
*lynn* - what is the story? I couldn't find that pic in any of the links. I'd love to retract such a harsh statement.

I recently painted my bedroom Benjamin Moore's Concrete Gray... it's absolutely lovely! It's a light gray, with a slightly purplish undertone, and it is incredibly soothing and chic!
*lynn* and unfilteredmeghan - thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
I'm also a big fan of Benjamin Moore's Revere Petwer. We painted the living room of our apartment this color, and I love it so much I will probably paint most of the rooms in our next house the same color.
I accidentally left my list of gray paints at home the day I went to buy paint (after agonizing over which one to pick for two months!) so I just went with my gut and got Benjamin Moore Iced Cube Silver and Silver Half Dollar. I love them! They're on the cooler side of gray but my apartment is very bright during the day so it worked out great. They look very nice at night too.
I love Farrow and Ball's Charleston Gray. Gorgeous! Just a little bit brown to make it warmer than the regular grays normally are but still a true gray. Plus, we painted an accent wall eggplant and it's looks amazing together.
farrow & balls lamp room grey is nice
I have used Sherwin Williams' "North Star" with great results.
Ralph Lauren's Forde Abbey in an eggshell finish. Love it in the living room!
My main bathroom is a Sico colour called "Sketch Paper". Looks great paired with bright white subway tile and bathroom fixtures.
Oooh I think I have a new found love for the blue and grey color combo.
did my whole apt. in BM's Cliffside Gray with BM Super White Trim/Ceilings. Love how it came out. Every room pops based on colors and art chosen, not the wall color.

Go gry, your home will love you for it! ;>)
fresh300 - i'm about to order this grey and white shower curtain from cb2. it has coordinating grey accessories as well.

I wanted to paint my front hall, the walls up our stairway and the upstairs hall a "true" gray -- not too blue, or brown, or purple, or green, or silver -- and it had to be light, because the stairs in particular don't get a lot of sun. It took me eight color samples but I ended up going with Benjamin Moore Metropolitan -- from their Aura line -- at 50% strength. It is perfect. Highly recommended -- and we get a lot of compliments on it.
My advice is to buy paint samples whenever possible with grays. I have had success choosing greens and blues right from the color chip, but all the grays came out totally different than they looked on the chips. I found that, more than other colors, they shifted a lot in different lights/at different times of day. It took a while but I was glad I took the time to try them all out first before making the commitment.
quinnley -- I agree with vicchick that BM Concrete Gray is a lovely lavenderish gray! It was one of the ones I tried out and vetoed. Wasn't what I wanted, but I thought it would have been beautiful in a bedroom.
We used Stone 5 from Yolo Colorhouse.
It's totally dreamy and warm. Put it in both our bedroom and the kid's.
Anyone know where that blue blanket is from? I love the colour!
We used BM's Kendell Charcoal for our clothing store that opened last year. We were concerned that it would be too dark but it turned out beautifully and gives so much depth to our space. I want to use it in our home next.
Here is some idea - www.showroom-mv.com
Sarah, if you aren't British or Canadian, I'm going to find you and throw a dictionary at you. It's "color" in the States.
My apartment has an open kitchen/dining room/living room -- the previous owners painted the kitchen/dining room area a very deep ivory and the living room a warm beige. I can't stand the beige and would love to replace it with a shade of grey without repainting the ivory as well. Can anyone recommend a shade that might work well without making the remaining walls look unappealingly yellow?
thebradseed- I am Canadian. I considered changing it for the Americans out there and then decided to embrace the 'u'.
um, aren't the second and fourth pictures tan?
Man I painted my bedroom gray and it came out lavender...and I am too broke/lazy to buy more paint.
@thebradseed, why are you assuming every commenter here is American? Obnoxious!
BEST light-medium grey... Behr's Koala Bear... such a soothing living room color.
I'm thinking of painting my bedroom (& perhaps my apartment) gray so this list of paint colours is a great resource.
There are 5 colors listed in this article. Do they correspond to the 5 pictures shown? Thanks!
Deezy, can you even read? I clearly didn't assume she was American.
thebradseed, are you the spelling police? On another post you got on about "gray" vs "grey," the former being American and the latter, British. I'm curious about why you seem so invested in the "correct" American usage of words on what is clearly a website with an international audience.
I'm all for people applying their native spellings. When Americans opt for English spellings, however, it's just a lazy way to make one's writing sound erudite. I'm glad to have learned that this site gets more international traffic than I had guessed.
I'm in the middle of reading a grammar text. Forgive me.
I painted my tiny studio apt "Smoke Embers" by Benjamin Moore and absolutely love it. Quinnley, it actually has a slightly lavendar look to it as well (at least in my apt).
quinnley, the only one I found that I liked, after dozens of swatches, was one I found at Walmart called Pewter Essence. It's light and fresh and not murky at all! More of a clean pale gray with vague purple undertones.
I adore that color combination! Grey with touches of yellow, lovely! The light Grey on the walls contrasts with the darker shade on the bedspread, and the large graphic adds interest without color looks very decent.
I just brought "grey" into my home for the first time. In my kitchen, that is in the process of being renovated, my cabinetry was painted "Coastal Fog" by Benjamin Moore. Walls will be "Swiss Coffee".
does anyone know the color of the first room?
Doing my bedroom in Forde Abbey by Ralph Lauren and I love it.
Which BM grey would go best with cream trim? Should it be a blue, purple, beige, or green undertone?
After experimenting with various chips, I think I've finally answered my own question. I 'm going with Revere Pewter and its warm undertones. I think that will look cleanest with the cream trim in our house.
Hi, I'm wondering if someone could tell me where the white headboard in the first photo came from. I've seen a million similar ones, but I'm looking for exactly this. Thanks!
My whole upstairs is BM Revere Pewter - Love it!!
What are the grey colors in the pictures. Thanks
