There's lots to love about inviting pets into your life and into your home, but pet hair and litter aren't amongst them. We've got two cats in our apartment, so that entails a regular schedule of sweeping, vacuuming and picking up debris related to sharing our home with our fur-covered overlords. But we've recently adopted the use of a cleaning appliance which has knocked off at least 25% of the time we previously spent cleaning around the house, thanks to its unbeatable performance as the ultimate handheld pet vacuum.
I've had a love and hate relationship with Dyson products: I love the technology behind their products, but I've never been so hot on the uber-Transformers industrial design of their cleaning appliances. The Dyson DC31 Animal Hand Vacuum doesn't change my opinion in this regard, with a purple and dark gray form factor which flaunts its high tech mechanics as a macho aesthetic statement. But once in hand, any doubts were sucked up and away by the undeniable performance and ergonomics of the DC31.
The DC31 is called the Animal for its intended use, engineered specifically for pet owners who have to deal with a mixture of hair, debris and occasionally the option to utilize the vacuum as a deterrent for bad behavior. But the moniker also refers to the power-performance of what often feels like a high powered weapon in hand; cleaning with the DC31 is an exhilarating feeling similar to using a power tool, except this one rids you of a mess instead of creating one. Ergonomic comfort is excellent, and the DC31 did a top notch job reaching inbetween crevices, under furniture and around our cats' litter boxes...well engineered for daily use and proving us wrong about our initial impression based upon appearances alone.
The high pitch whir of the motor spins at a rate 10x faster than a 747 jet engine, which cuts down cleaning time significantly (I spent less time going over a spot thanks to the 104,000 rpm power of cyclonic fury). The trade off is the DC31 can only be used for 6-10 minutes at a time: 10 minutes with normal 38 watts setting and 6 minutes using the 65 watts power setting. It's the price you pay for instant gratification.
Cleaning and emptying the unit is fairly easy. A red switch opens a bottom trapdoor, emptying the main canister. The canister itself only holds a modest amount of material and I'd recommend emptying it outside, since like any non bag model, a small plume of whatever you cleaned is likely to appear upon emptying [cough cough]. An additional filter needs to be cleaned after several uses to keep the vac operating in tip-top shape, but the whole cleaning process won't take more than a couple minutes unless you want to get meticulous.
The Dyson DC31 comes with debris nozzle, crevice tool and motorized brusher. All three have proven to be useful around the house, unlike with some other vacuum accessories which get relegated to the "never use it" accessories pile. The motorized brusher is our favorite, perfect for removing pet hair from upholstery and carpet in just a couple of swipes. The crevice tool is adept for litter box duty, while the debris nozzle is proficient for kitchen surface and floor clean up.
At $269.99 (you can save a little bit online), this handheld vacuum doesn't come cheap and is more of a luxury than a necessity. But if one wants a way to cut down on cleaning time daily as a pet owner, there isn't a better cleaning appliance we've yet used than the DC31. It won't replace your full size vacuum, but as a Robin to a full size vacuum Batman, the DC31 makes for an excellent sidekick for any pet household, purple outfit and all.
Pros: Performance is best we've tested, solid construction, motorized brushbar excellent at removing pet hair, form factor allows for easy reach around household.
Cons: Loud, only 6-10 minutes use time, Michael Bay weaponry style design not for everyone, price, low capacity

Howard Butcher Bloc...
These are exceptionally amazingly nice vacuums with an exceptionally amazingly large price tag. My sister has almost everything Dyson makes and I've used them while house sitting. For power and portability, you can buy a non cordless wet/dry shop vac in the 1-3 gallon size and a 50' chord for a little over 1/10 of the price of one of these.
Despite the high price tag, if I could afford it, I'd throw down the money in the heartbeat. They really are some sweet lookin' vacuums.
I have two chihuahuas and wool upholstery. Their pet hair sticks to the upholstery. A regular vacuum attachment didn't work. Two weeks ago, I tested two hand vacs: a black and decker pet vac and the bissell pet eraser. The black and decker hardly picked up any pet hairs. The bissel pet eraser, which I ended up keeping, was impressive. The rubber tips grabbed and bunched the hair from the upholstery and a strong vacuum suction picked it up. Only $29.99 on amazon.
It only runs for 6-10 minutes, and you have to clean it every time you clean with it? I'm not sure I'd want to spend $270 on that.
I had to replace my vacuum recently. I got a Eureka Boss after researching vacuums on consumersearch.com. The price was right, and the "pet paw" host attachment gets fur and litter out of carpeting no problemo. It's like a little mini vacuum wand.
I was on board until the 6-10 minutes. I would expect more out of something that costs that much.
Aherm. Personally, I'd go with Consumer Reports' recommendations. They do extensive testing, are non-profit and non-biased, and know the difference between "it's" and "its."
They've never ranked a Dyson product as a "Recommended" product.
Wow, the price on this has gone up. I have an earlier model that was originally priced at $139 which i got on clearance for $99. Its better than any other hand held vacuum I've ever owned. I can't say enough great things about it though. I use if for everything. As far as the 10 minute time frame I think it lasts slightly more than that, but it doesn't run continuously. It only runs as you hold down the power button. It is plenty of time for me to vacuum my two microsuede chairs and two ottomans and keep them free of cat fur.
God I hope Dyson goes bankrupt.......
The motor broke on our Dyson handheld within a couple years. I called them to replace it and the operator asked my if I had been vacuuming DUST, I said "Well, most likely." They said "Well that'll do it." The new motor was around $70. I think the whole situation was crazy. I can't wait till I can afford a Miele.
How ridiculous, Sparklebot! That's insane! God forbid you vacuum anything with dust on it.
While everyone's needs are different, I had four requirements when considering a handheld vacuum:
1) a motorized beater brush to loosen embedded fur
2) a powerful suction system to collect the loosened particles
3) decent ergonomics and usability
4) the ability to actually purchase the thing
The Dyson, by all accounts, does well on the first two. The design makes it seem unbalanced and front-heavy, which makes me question its ergonomics. The battery life is abysmal, and makes it unusable for larger jobs. And its price is beyond what I'm able to spend on a portable vacuum for doing furniture, stairs, etc.
So I got a Eureka 71B. So far, it meets all of my requirements, not just half. Motorized beater brush, powerful motor, onboard cord/tool storage, well-balanced design, and 1/6th the cost of the Dyson.
Yeah...to clean up 4 cats' worth of furballs and cat litter spray, uh-huh....
$270 and 6-10 minutes total time - I got money and no time to waste
$99 little dirt devil and 20-30 minutes total time - more money to spend on a massage
$0.00 Employ a bunch of 6 year old kids, tell em it's a game where I can wrap tape around their hands upside-down tape to run over the couches/chairs and watch them laugh and run like crazy - Priceless
I have the Animal Standing Vacuum and I can say enough about how I love it. The Suction is so good you can catch a fly with the hose and its great for people with allergies or basement apartments. When emptying the funnel take the vacuum outside so you don't release the dander or dust back into the apartment.
