So I jumped on the Roomba wagon about a year ago and up until now, I've actually been fairly impressed with the little guy. I mean, it really forced you to keep up with a clean apartment - meaning any clothes, magazines, and shoes on the floor required a constant eye for decluttering...

I lurve Charlie, my roomba. He's such a busy little guy. What joy to leave the house in the morning, and come home to swept floors!!! I removed all the carpet in my house when I bought because I have allergies. Charlie does a phenomenal job in cleaning up, and I really do have to keep the place relatively tidy, so that he can work (which is a benefit, not a bad thing!) The charge is lessening, after a year and a half daily use, so when this battery does finally die, I will gladly fork out for another battery, or another roomba (*sniffle* or Charlie II as it will become known as) Ok, now that you think I'm all nuts, I'll sign off.
I've had them the past 5 years. These need to be replaced often much like a computer moniter (or at least my experience with moniters). But, to me, I'd rather have one than not have one even though they have to be upgraded fairly often. The first time I had an expensive "rescheduler" which lasted about a year-and-half. I replaced the friggingly expensive battery in it, barely lasted a few more months, and other things were wrong by then too.
Second time, I bought a less expensive one, but still middle ground. Same thing. I didn't bother with a battery this time.
This time I bought the cheapest one (no walls, no scheduling). I have every bit as happy with this one as with the more expensive ones - in fact happier.
I take my old ones to the computer recycler here, they accept it instead of dropping it in the landfill.
I hate when I'm without it, there's nothing like reading a book and vacuuming at the same time!
Do they do stairs? ;^)
I have seen video attesting to what great cat toys they can be, but I don't think they'd work in my place.
I got rid of mine because they needed so much tweaking and iRobot's communication is horrible. I had to register my Roomba and Scooba, but when one of them needed a critical firmware update, iRobot didn't contact me and other owners. Only those of us who prowled around on the iRobot forums and then filled out a web form were sent the update (via a drive that had to be returned).
I sold them both on Craigslist for $100 and am pleased that they don't take up space in my life anymore.
My dog was terrified of them, too.
lemort1 - My Roomba's name is Charlie too! I love him to death (and the point of absentmindedly talking to him). I'm also dorky enough to have framed Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics above his dock. Maybe Roomba people are just a little nuts. ;)
