Beautiful, iconic modern furniture often comes with a staggering price tag. A brand-new Eames lounger will set you back $5,700. Eero Saarinen's womb chair is $6,000. A single Bertoia side chair costs almost $700. So what's a lover of modern design on a modest budget to do?

I like all of them! I remember when the Michael Graves teakettle came out - didn't he show some things through Target?
I would add the Norm 69 to the list: http://www.shop.normann-copenhagen.com/eu/products/norm-69.aspx
great post. i love classic design, but only ever admire from afar...these, i'd actually be able to buy.

I kick myself for not buying the kartell's componibilli modular storage which was laying unloved at the tip/dump, who knows it could have been the real thing. It caught my eye and I did'nt know why but when I went back to buy it, it was gone.
a couple points of interest:
the womb chair starts at $3,447 not $6,000.
eames lounge at $4,500, not $5,700.
All worthy choices, except perhaps for the Alessi tea kettle at $175. It's a little TOO iconic at this point, I hear it's hot to handle, and I think the OXO kettle for about 40 bucks is wonderful design.
I left my Michael Graves kettle on the stove too long and the little birdie melted.
you can order new birds somewhere online.. I did that for a vintage Alessi kettle I found, it was cheap!
I'm happy to say that the Kartell componibili modular storage unit costs only 132 USD (97 EUR) in Belgium. I bought it for my then 12 year old daughter 2 Xmas's ago. Her fist design piece. And she loved it (and still does)! My son got the Spacewalker design lamp (Dark). I'm a single mom with limited income. And I thought these would be nice presents to keep forever, in stead of another game or toy that would just end up in the bin after 1 year.
dwr recently released the Thonet chairs (#1above) in some bright colors and they're on sale for $127.
Loved the Tord Boontje hanging lamp from the first time I saw it! Unfortunately I haven't seen it for sale in Toronto. Help!
I can't say we use our kettle a lot anymore (water boiler wins) but when I did buy one, I did it while visiting my family in the Netherlands:

I think I paid 20 euros for it. Bar. gain. And to me, more iconic.
Try http://www.FunkyLights.com/ they have great mid century modern furniture and lighting at really good prices.
It's Kartell sale next week! 15% off everything.
Anyone have ideas about how to hack the eames table?
