For the past couple of years, Apartment Therapy has eagerly awaited word on Pantone's pick for "color of the year" so we could announce it to all of you. This time, we had a little advance notice, making it easy to share the news right away — so without further ado, the color of the year for 2011 is....
The official word on why it was chosen from Pantone forecaster Leatrice Eiseman:
In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues. Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.
The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages. In fact, this color, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer.

As the owner of a hot pink/red dining table (here's a photo) I'm happy with the news that, at least for 2011, my guests will be eating off of an "au courant" colored surface AND I'm glad the focus is shifting toward such an energetic, upbeat color. Out with the calm and in with the wild!
What do you think of the choice? Do you have any honeysuckle-colored accents (or rooms!) at home? Would you add some? Let us know....

Hooray for pink!
How can you show a pink interior and not show Rhoda's apartment? ;) A few good screen captures here:

Oooh, wow, hate to say it, but that is one ugly color, in and of itself.
It's somewhat swallowable with just that touch on the chairs, but I would run screaming from that room.
Oh, Pantone, are the economic and climate worldviews so bad that you feel you have to distract us so violently?
I personally LOVE that color. But naming it honeysuckle? Like... really? I've seen honeysuckle in this color, but the color that most people on the planet think of is a warm yellowish hue. You know... because it's got the word "honey" in it. Hmmm... maybe I'm wrong, but I think this is a Pantone fail.
It's not that bad. As an accent colour it's pretty nice, in fact. I'm not sure about doing a whole room in it, but I wouldn't turn up my nose at a vase or pillow or two around the house in this colour.
I guessed fuschia.... it seems to follow turquoise... (would love to be privy to the rationale behind their choices)
It's okay. But I think I would call Honeysuckle something more appropriate...like Watermelon.
Agreed; it's really watermelon.
Haha the 2010 color is the same as my kitchen, and the 2011 color is in my half bathroom already! YAY!
Totally "watermelon". Honeysuckle sounds like a yellow/green. Weird.
Anyway, I dig it as an accent color.
Seeing all of those colors together remind me of the opening credits to Saved By The Bell.
Think Pink!

No no. Ar least not in my home. How could I sleep with this screaming?
Have you ever seen a honeysuckle plant? It's that exact shade of deep magenta pink! They also come in whites, but I definitely associate it with that pink. :)
I LOVE IT!! PINK RULES, anyone can sleep in this??. oh come on people, lets not get so dramatic,..it's gorgeous, think out of the box other then beige, cream, tan, white, offwhite, taupe,...this makes such a wonderful statement and 'color therapy' like this can make someone happy by all this amazing color! It really can, so splash pink in your home and get happy!!!!!
Love pink! And those chairs are BRILLIANT!!
Ewwwww. That is all.
UGH!
Well, this is definitely not the color of a honeysuckle, so that's kind of weird! I'm pretty sure I would have preferred the actual color of a buttery honeysuckle to this jarring pink-red.
Love it!
This sealed the deal...I reupholstering my vintage chairs in velvet hot pink or shall I say honeysuckle!!!
I've got to go with the group that says Honeysuckle is a pale yellow. I've not seen a bright pink honeysuckle plant, so the color association is probably regional. I would have chosen a color name that's a little more universal, like the suggested fuscia (watermelon is more red).
That said, I think it works better as an accent color.
Pink? honeysuckle? That's straight up natural red guys! That "fire engine red" or that "red" you see on stop signs? That's red-orange, which is why you can't mix nice colours with it.
This... THIS. Is red. You can't make this. Not "pink-red", but RED. Sweet glorious primary red.
@Sandra Conti -- just because the color makes YOU happy does NOT mean it makes ME happy -- just so you know! Don't assume those of us who don't like it are just curmudgeons -- we maybe just don't like pink/s.
I could maybe see it as a couple of sofa pillows or ONE small chair, but no more.
This is a Fuschia plant color not a Honeysuckle plant. Maybe the person naming does not garden and thought the Fuschia plant was Honeysuckle. Teeny tiny accent color. I would not redo anything large in this color, too trendy looking for one thing. A pillow. In the guest room. That goes in the closet when the guest sleeps.
Ah well. Can't please everyone, huh. The honeysuckle of my youth was the creamy ivory color, not pink like this. And of course coral-colored (aka pink) honeysuckle is not pink like this. I've never seen honeysuckle this color, but apparently is exists :)
I am not a fan of bright pinks (talk to me about ballet-slipper pink, however, and I will melt all over you). Nevertheless, this is an energizing pink, and in small doses, might use it. I would love a tea pot in this color.
I am intrigued though, and maybe this could be a future article for AT's Home Design section: How DOES Pantone decide what to call a color?
For example, if I say something is Williamsburg blue, most of you will know what color I am talking about. But from so many of the comments here, Pantone's decision to call their new pink "Honeysuckle" was a bit of a miss.
@melle---If the new color is red on your computer monitor, I suspect your monitor needs to be adjusted. It happens. But honestly, it's not red, and for sure not fire-engine red. It's pink.
Melle, I just realized that I misread your post, and I apologize. But it's still not red :)
I'm awfully chatty today, so I apologize to all of you. Sigh.
I was hoping for purple.
Does anyone know if there is a page with more of the years colors, or did they start in 2008?
I was also thinking that "honeysuckle" is not the appropriate name for that color. I'm not surprised by their choice.
Ugh - I wish these super-bold colors pass already!!! I want my muted tones back in stores! (They are fun, but not everyone can wear them. I haven't been able to buy anything that isn't black, white, or brown in years - and my wardrobe is feeling it).
Love it with all different metals; copper, silver or pewter.
Love the color in small doses. In fact, I just reupholstered 2 of my 6 DR chairs in a similar color. The fabric is more accurately called "Peony." Not sure where honeysuckle is pink, but it's not in Atlanta!

I LOOOOOVVVVEEEE ITTTT! However, my husband would really, really hate it. Perhaps I should paint the downstairs bathroom with it.... ohhh so faboo!
love it!!! absolute perfection, PLUS it totally goes with Turquoise!
lol @ NattyO
"Hello, Barbie? Pantone called.....they found your color."
Yickkkkkkkkkkkk. :(

So, apparently honeysuckle comes in white, light yellow, and yes, pink, but I'll be damned if I've ever seen a hot-pink honeysuckle anywhere on the west coast.
I always consider the color of the year to be a version of planned obsolescence, the favorite tool of clever marketing.
That is so great. I bought 8 yards of fabric to cover my favorite chair in a color that I guess is we're calling "honeysuckle." I love it because even though it is pink, it has a coral mixed with red kind of vibe. I figured it was a great way to get a big dose of pink into the space without offending my boyfriend. Also it will complement red accents and accessories that I have clustered in a couple places in the room.
Is it just me, or are the last four years of Pantone "it" colours strongly reminiscent of the early 90s?
Maybe people are thinking of cultivated honeysuckle. In the Northeast and North Central US, the wild honeysuckle is exactly that color. I grew up picking honeysuckle flowers and "sucking the honey" in the woods of Minnesota.
Clearly I have happy associations with this color--so I love it.
I think you're right, blandwagon. I remember late 1980s sweaters and tees in just those shades of blue, turquoise, and gold (all so unwearable for me that I retreated to an all-black wardrobe for the next 10 years). In 1992 I painted my studio apt bathroom just this shade of red/pink in an effort to distract from the frigid temp's of upstate NY. . . .
AH- the color of the flamingos gracing the front entry way to my little condo . so hopeful and playful!
Huh. Honeysuckles around here are orange.
There are more tones and hues of this color, not the best example -

mmmh just looking at it give me a headache...
Is there a misprint here? Mimosa is pink and honeysuckle is yellow. That would explain all the confused commentators.
Oh, mimosa cocktail, not mimosa flowers....
Not loving the color and I do think it is planned obsolescence those that rush out and buy fabric, paint etc. because this is "the color" will probably be wondering what they were thinking this time next year. Those that truly love the color probably already have a room with it in it. Also the chair legs painted that color make the room look unfinished just paint the entire chair it would look better. Entirely too Punky Brewster for me.
Personally, the colour here would strike me more as either Rhododendron or Azalea, but that is likely because of where I have lived.
Anyway, names don't matter for Pantone, only the reference code. Colour of the year is just a money maker - Pantone books are not cheap and this is an excuse to publish a new one. I'm not biting...I'll leave that to my printer.
I'm stuck on turquoise... I just can't let it go...
tomato... soup with cream stirred in... mitigated 50s
uh, why isn't honeysuckle the color of honeysuckles?
yeah....I'm in agreement. I must be really uninformed because I thought honeysuckle was yellow? Well, at least in Ohio it is!
Name aside, I like the color...I would definitely use it for accent pieces for pops of color!
I'm not ready, or may never be... ready to let go of 2010's COTY. I'm embracing Honeysuckle - especially after seeing your beautiful examples. Nest time I'm hunting for 4-leaf clovers, I'll also be hunting for pink honeysuckles. Who knew!
I like the four colors shown. My house exterior is turquoise. My front door is honeysuckle. My living room has a lot of blue iris. It and and the guest room also have a lot of mimosa. Keep 'em coming!
Badly named color, but I like it. I painted my bathroom "Peony" (Benjamine Moore) which is very similar. It's good for a small space, overwhelming for a big space, great for accents. I'm a fan of intense pinks but most men in my life have not been. If you want to keep men out of your office or bedroom or bathroom that is a good way to do it.
A Dutch paintcompany predicted a yellow-ish color for 2011. See some inspiration here:
http://www.stylink.nl/Kleur-van-het-jaar-2011-gelig.html
The pictures of pink honeysuckle show them to much paler. This strikes me as more of an aggressive bougainvillea.
I agree with alot of others who have questioned the label that has been given to this colour - honeysuckle? Really? I think not.
As for the colour itself, it can look great as an accent used in small doses but the full room treatment would drive me crazy.
Pardon me, is that a rabbit piggy bank on your breakfast table?
I like this glass tile by AlysEdwards in the "honeysuckle" color
Crimson Groovy Stixx Glass Tile
Why not call it bouganvillea?
Haha, happyleaf, I did the same thing, in 2009 I painted my dining room turquoise (Valspar's La Fonda Teal) and in 2010, I painted my kitchen that color (Benjamin Moore's Fuchsine). It's just on 3 walls and it doesn't take up alot of space but it really compliments the 3 colors of wood I have in there and I always choose one room to have a crazy, fun color.
Personally, I've always loved this color, it just makes me happy, it's feminine and warm without the Barbie/bubblegum connotations - at least in my opinion. But I can see how people either love it or hate it, I've been given a lot of forced smiles and "interesting" comments, as well as people saying "I love it," either way it's good :)

And I have to agree, when I think honeysuckle, I think yellow-ish, this is much more fuschia, although, this color does remind me of hummingbirds.
...You know what? Suddenly, I'd love to see those four working together. Blue iris, Mimosa, Turquoise, and Honeysuckle. Nice, bright, and warm, with just enough cool tones in the turquoise and blue iris to keep it from being overwhelming.
@HongKonger,
Amen on the Pantone numbers - and just "listening" in on all the comments proves why color names seem to be more a creation of the marketing department.
So while everyone is having an energetic argument about exactly what color is THAT, the folks at Pantone are laughing all the way to the bank, since their (very expensive) books remain true to shade and tint only for 1 year.
Ditto leaving the problem with the printer - when I used to work for a company with a very exact color scheme to be implemented worldwide, I used to drive our vendor nuts when I insisted they follow the Pantone numbers we issued. (Guess that happens when they call a particular color after you, but that's another story)
It's definitely more native honeysuckle colored (lonicera sempervirens)-- the Asian import with the yellow/white flowers (lonicera Japonica) is much more common and probably what most people will think of.
It looks orangey-red to me, but I know the monitors here at work are off, so I'll have to wait until I can look on a different computer.
Not in a million years.
Love it - I also love that I painted a bed I found on the side of the road this color and then I find out it's the "it" color. It's a nice, rare moment:http://pennypickles.net/blog/2010/12/03/roadside-bed-makeovers/
Yes, honeysuckle does come in pale creams and yellows, but also vivid pinks. Google 'honeysuckle' and view the various shades it comes in. It's a beautiful color, but perhaps a full room of the deepest shade may be a tad much! I prefer to use this color as accent to brighten up a space.
There are a ton of great pink interior design pictures floating around now. Some of them are quite remarkable.
Beautiful pictures. I just posted an article on my interior design blog
