When buying a couch for your home, comfort is key although style and design also play key roles. A deep couch with a lot of seating room is super comfy - but not for everyone.
I had a moment a few years ago when I realized that I can't sit comfortably in deep couches. Standing a tall 5'4, I simply felt like Edith Ann, the character Lily Tomlin portrayed of the little girl sitting in a huge chair. When visiting friends who have one, like Heather and Josh, I have learned how to enjoy hanging out without feeling like a 5 year old.
1) Add an extra pillow or two behind you. Yea, this is the best way to fill up that extra space that you don't need.
2) Sit sideways. When your hanging out, sit on the end of the couch and turn in. You can lean back against the armrest and can sit comfortably with both feet on the ground.
3) Curl up. If the deep couch is in a home with owners you know, consider throwing off your shoes and curling up on the couch.
How do you deal with a deep couch? I certainly would love an extra tip or two.

I gotta ask:
Who anymore sits on a sofa with their feet on the floor like they're sitting on a pew in church?
Doesn't everyone kick their shoes off and curl up on the sofa or stretch out lengthwise?
"Doesn't everyone kick their shoes off and curl up on the sofa or stretch out lengthwise?"
On their own couch, sure, but probably not when visiting someone they aren't super close to.
That is what throw pillows are for. Women everywhere are vindicated; yes, men, they do serve a function.
I often find myself sliding into a slump on our deep leather couch, and I have very long legs. I would prefer a less deep sofa, if we ever buy another.
I'm 5'7", and I've never found a deep sofa to be uncomfortable. But when I'm at home or at a friend's house, I curl up on the sofa. And if I'm at someone's house, and I don't know them well, I tend to perch, not sit back.
I hear ya! I'm 5'3" and I've spent my whole adult life sitting uncomfortably on coaches and chairs because my feet don't quite touch the ground. Face it, the world is made for tall people. Does anyone know of a furniture company that specializes in making chairs for short people?
I sat on a coach once.
"I sat on a coach once."
How did he like it?
Someday, *designers* will pay heed to the dimensions of the human body. But not in my lifetime.
Gimme those pillows!
I'm 5' 2". My husband is 6' 2".
It took us months before we finally found a couch we liked that wouldn't bankrupt us. And, yes...it's a deep couch.
Deep couches are not built for me- so I bought a petite settee instead. It's plush and comfortable, but I don't get lost in it.
Here's another furniture proportion issue that always baffles me- why are so many desks too low for women to cross their legs underneath (while sitting in a typical-height chair?). It's no wonder I hate working at a desk: I can't concentrate if I'm constantly banging my knees underneath!
"why are so many desks too low for women to cross their legs underneath "
It's not that the desk is low...
...It's that there's a drawer blocking you from crossing your legs - nobody expected folks to cross their legs while seated at a desk (doing so cuts off circulation)
Put that desktop higher and you'll have problems with working on the surface - Carpal Tunnel anyone?
Solution: Choose a desk without a pencil drawer or don't cross your legs.
My first couch was ultra deep and I loved it so much but I couldn't fit it through my new apartment's doorways. I bought one that I now absolutely hate simply because it isn't deep enough. Gah.
I'm shortish and have always always always curled my legs up under/beside me when seated. I still sit on my feet at the dinner table. When the situation calls for more formality, I perch on the edge.
i love that couch, it matches an armchair i have perfectly. where is it from/who owns it/can i have it?
bepsf: Let's assume that I have a brain. The issue isn't a desk that I bought myself- I have a perfect vintage desk at home that accommodates for leg-crossing perfectly. The issue is that I work for a living, but wasn't really consulted about the office furniture. And no pencil drawer, just an annoyingly short desk.
Appreciate your concern about my circulation and comfort, though.
*oops, two "perfects." I'll admit, that wasn't particularly brainy.
it wasnt until i was recovering from my last pregnancy that i realized just how deep my couches are and how much i dislike that about them. my husband and i are both small framed and have agreed that our next couch purchase will be the perfect ratio of fit and comfort.. whenever that will be.
Deep couches are great for spooning! But sitting not so much...
I'm 5'4" and not with long legs, and I love me some deep couches! I hope to have one at home someday. I hate when I'm over at someone's house, and I feel like I can't really rest on the sofa, instead I get the feeling I'm perched on an edge. Makes me want to throw their back cushions to the floor and settle in, but that would be rude, so I don't. :)
There are a few nice deep couches out there, but unfortunately most deep couches are vulgar. The lack of support is inconsiderate to the pregnant and the elderly, and frankly for the rest of us it's hard to be charming and witty with your guests when you're splayed almost horizontally.
Go into one of those furniture warehouses that does a lot of TV advertising (Harvey Norman in Australia - I don't know the US equivalent) and you'll see that their couches are immense, designed for obese proles to loll on in their home theatres. Then go to a posh design boutique and notice that the Featherstone and Knoll reproductions don't have deep seats or masses of throw pillows.
So there you go: the deeper the seat, the lower on the social scale. Don't say I didn't warn you.
I'm 5' 2". My husband is 6' 2". Us too! And what we discovered it wasn't always depth that made a couch uncomfortable; but how the back was angled in relation to the seat. The more "upright" the couch the less the depth was a problem for the shorter of us. We went with the London, but covered in fabric during the upholstery sale.
I have the opposite problem. I'm 5'9 and my husband is 6'2 and just recently purchased a new couch. While shopping, a lot of the couches that we liked made me feel like a giant (and the cushions cut into the back of my legs). I loved the deeper couches but their too small for my living room. So we ended up getting one with a 36" seat and it's almost too short with the back cushions.
oops, *they're* not *their*--must be time for bed.
*oops, two "perfects." I'll admit, that wasn't particularly brainy.
nor was it particularly polite.
I'm all of 5'1" and my mother and (she's an inch shorter than me) were having a discussion about this while sitting on her new (very deep and overstuffed) couch.
I have a similar office chair:height ratio problem. Even at it's lowest setting, my feet can't sit flat on the ground like they ergonomically should.
I am a 'curl up' person. I sit 'rock pose' or 'half lotus' nearly all the time in an attempt to keep my spine straight. (Yeah I took some Yoga classes) Just kick off my shoes and go for it. I like to pretend it burns more calories than sitting normally.
We bought the "Lounge" sofa and extra wide chair from Crate and Barrel when we moved into our new house a few months ago. We absolutely love them. We have our couch facing the TV, which we love to curl up in and watch movies, and our chair facing the fireplace. I love having an extra deep couch though it's a little big for the width of my living room, they are perfect for our lifestyle.
Where can I get this sofa?? Love it! Seriously. Where?
The great thing about a deep couch, given that it's long enough, is that your sweetie can stretch out lengthwise against the back, and then you can stretch out lenghthwise in front of him/her, and then you can snuggle while you watch tv until you have to convince yourself to struggle to your feet to toddle off to bed. For that experience, Whatever strategies it takes to make the couch workable otherwise is worth it.
I love my deep couch... very comfy for me and my beau to lay on side by side. great for snuggling! Unfortunately, my kitty has shred mine to pieces. Debating on redoing or getting a new one... anybody know of any good ones that are reasonably priced?
please tell us where this sofa is! its fab!
I love deep couches! But then, I'm the curl-up type, so.
I'm 4'10 and have disproportionally short legs. No matter how small that couch is, it's going to be too small for me anyway - and if it fits me, there's no way anyone short of (pun unintended) a little kid will be able to sit comfortably. At least a deep one means I can curl up comfortably.
No, deep couches are ugly and difficult for us shorties. I love my vintage couch -- perfect proportions.
I'm a measy 5'4" myself and I love deep couches. Since I do take my shoes off in my home and other's homes, I just sit with my feet curled under me.
If the situation surfaced where I actually was spending more than five mins at someone's house I didn't know, I probably would choose a chair over the couch - or even the floor.
omg bepsf is so annoying. that is all
