The Designers Field Guide to Sustainability published by Lunar, an award-winning product design firm, is a tool designed to help designers and engineers, no matter their experience, design more sustainable products. The guide discusses sustainable product development and product life cycle with four questions: What is [the product] trying to accomplish? How is it brought to life? How is it used? Where does it end up?
A bit more about LUNAR:
To help LUNAR designers and engineers create more sustainable products, the LUNAR Elements team researches and catalogs materials, processes and resources that will lessen the impact of products on our ecosystem. To facilitate these sessions, LUNAR Elements created The Designers Field Guide to Sustainability, a first step in helping guide designers and engineers through the confusing world of sustainable design. Following through on our commitment as Designers Accord adopters, this guide is meant to be part of the growing public discourse on sustainability and is our contribution to the product development community's rapidly maturing practices in responsible design.
Of course, the guide is not the be-all-end-all. We all know these are complex issues that warrant a great deal of thought and discussion. But it's a good starting point.
