We recently came across a list of the top 10 dirtiest things that we routinely touch that had us reaching for the anti-bacterial soap. Surprisingly 9 of the top 10 items are your own, either in your household or in your pocket. We highlight some of the scary items on the list and techniques to stay clean and healthy. Yuck.
Ranker's "Top 10 Dirtiest Things You Touch Every Day" lists in order:
- Money
- Light Switch
- Computer Keyboard
- Cell Phone
- Toilet Seat
- Shopping Cart
- Remote Control
- Bathtub
- Kitchen Sink
- Kitchen Sponge
"Keeping hands clean is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of infection and illness." The Centers for Disease Control actually has pages and pages on proper techniques for washing your hands. The Mayo Clinic also stresses hand washing, explaining the when and how for those that need a little reminder.
Check out these great cleaning tips from Unplggd that deep clean some of the items from the list. For your kitchen sponge, we suggest just keeping a stack of spares and separating their tasks, replacing often. You can send all your dirty money to us, care of Jason Yang at Apartment Therapy Unplggd.

Nomade Express Slee...
I was going to say my face.
Umm ? Door knob? That is much dirtier than a toilet seat. Also, there is a huge difference between a public toilet and a private toilet.
I recall an experiment in middle school where we tested the drinking fountain against the toilet seat at the school, and the drinking fountain spout carried more germs! Gross!
BTW, those Magic Erasers suck. They last only a few scrubs, and leave crumbly pieces all over the place. They also are basically bleaching your stuff - not just cleaning it. Something to think about if you use them on anything other than something that is stark white.
and the cat is hilarious and I don't even like cats
Totally agree with jpb, both on Magic Erasers and the cat photo (except I like cats).
Slightly related: I'd never seen my cats express any interest in our kitchen counters until one day, when one jumped up on the counter and began licking fresh tomatoes that were in a bowl - with the sort of familiarity that indicated she has Done This Before.
Lol Janis. Check out the cat deterrents and more cat stuff we covered earlier to keep your cat off the counter!
I think I'm the only one at my work that actually uses Clorox wipes on the phones and keyboards, and it drives me INSANE. I'm such a germaphobe at work cause I know how nasty people are!
Thanks, Jason, I'll revisit that post.
@jpb - Magic Erasers are a melamine foam and contain no bleach.
Ha ha...I'm cracking up at the cat keyboard image..priceless.
Clean vs. sanitary! many of these solutions seem to be simply tidying visible dust and grime away. If the list was about simply dirty things (meaning dirty, not crawling with bacteria) I think the number one spot would be, well, dirt! Not money ;)
@NicodemusBC: Knowing that it's my own old poop particles on the toilet seat vs a stranger's old poop particles is only slightly comforting. ;)
Holy moly. We have immune systems for a reason. Ever wonder why everyone has allergies these days while our grandparents didn't? Ever wonder why we have drug resistant bugs? It's because of the retail use of antimicrobials. They should only be used in hospitals, but this article suggest wasting their potency by spraying them on everything in our lives.
nyc subway poles...gross..it's usually slimmy and gross and warm. i'd lov to hold it with something else lika piece of cloth but i am afraid that others will look at me like i am crazy. at least in winter, i have gloves.
I agree With your points pal
These are the most common things we touch every day that are filled with dirt and germs making them the least clean objects in our life
