Unplggd reader Michael Papitsas sent us some photos and information about a novel DIY solution that invisibly hides away what can quickly become an eyesore in a household with numerous handheld devices. Michael converted an IKEA case into a hideaway mobile handheld charging station, perfect for cell phones and mp3 players, all nicely hidden from sight.
I live in a small apartment and I own several small devices that are energy-greedy. I tried in the past to dedicate some space near a wall plug, to charge them all, but it always looked bad and cluttered. I searched for a professional solution to buy, but they are either expensive or ... really expensive! And usually not future upgradeable...
So I decided to build one, and the result was a BULKY IKEA box that laid on the floor for quite some time behind a rocking chair. After furniture rearrangement (chic!), I used that space and I was left with no-money. So I had to improvise and find a solution for the only available place ... my living room, and it had to blend in.
THEN it stroked me!! Why not transform this beautiful black IKEA vase into a stealth charging station??
A smart and affordable solution, and possibly even a security measure, since would-be thieves would unlikely peek inside a flower vase. Michael's project can be seen complete with further instructions over at Instructable's How to transform an IKEA vase into a Charging Station for your gadgets.

I thought it was going to be hidden in the globe which would be really cool.
This could work... Until one of your inebriated friends attempts to water the plants.
Clever! But I can't imagine moving a plant, however small, each time I come in the door. Electronics charging is something I want to take less effort, not more.
BRILLIANT! Thanks for the idea!

Pick up your flower!
I don't get it. What do you do about the eyesore Ikea vase with a fake flower in it?
