A couple of my friends had decided it was time for a new refrigerator. As they became increasingly interested in a particular model, the salesman warned them about its downside — it wasn't magnetic. Downside? They were sold! It now sits, tranquil in their kitchen, with not a party invitation, wallet photo, or dry-erase board in sight. And they couldn't be happier.
Personally, I tend to keep my refrigerator door pretty neat and tidy. Usually, all you will find on it is a small calendar for coordinating family schedules and a recent party invitation tucked along the top of the calendar. Just the same, it's very freeing knowing that if I wanted to plaster the door with photos, magazine clippings, and magnets, I could! I don't think I could be content with a non magnetic refrigerator.
Is your fridge door neat and tidy, or cluttered and busy? Would you be able to live without a magnetic refrigerator?

I wouldn't exactly call my fridge "Clean"...
It's loaded w/ magnets acquired from different cities in my travels as well as a few from Anne Taintor whose humor I absolutely love!
http://annetaintor.com/
But it's all neatly arranged!
I could live with it, but I don't think I would prefer it. Right now, I have some Pikachu, Zelda, and kawaii mushroom magnets holding up some of my colorful sketches. I think it allows a little more cute and geeky personality in my kitchen. I would not be nearly as happy looking at my fridge if Pikachu's grinning mug wasn't there.
I allow myself to "clutter" the side of my fridge, but never the front. With the front clean and clear, it looks neat and tidy. The side has coupons, calendars, and odds/ends types notes that would be forgotten if tucked out of site, but still try to keep them organized and looking neat. If it ever starts to get cluttered, I pull everything down and start over.... ultimately though, when I upgrade my fridge, if it isn't magnetic, I don't think I'll miss it.
My fridge is empty and I'd have it no other way.
I too have a refrigerator that won't hold magnets. And it doesn't bother me in the least. But maybe that's because I'm not a "refrigerator magnet" kind of girl. I'm very particular about what does and doesn't get displayed in my house. While I think that other peoples' fridge displays are often very cute and cozy, it's just not my look.
Love my cluttered fridge! Everytime I pet sit for a friend I ask for a magnet in return. So my fridge has magnets from all over the world holding up drunken, hilarious pictures of my friends, which makes me so happy!
I have spice containers on the "hidden" side of my fridge, but otherwise my fridge is clean... except for a few things that my mom has given me over the years, and I feel obligated to display. I keep trying to figure out a good way to get rid of them... I LOVE Mom's photo-filled fridge door, but would hate to have that in my house for some reason!
When I first moved into my current home, slapping on the old magnet collection onto the fridge door was one of the first things I did, and there they stayed, until I gave the door a wipe. For some reason, some magnetic pieces were harder to remove than others, some seemed to be practically welded on and could only be removed with a spatula and grim determination. I don't know what the cause for this was but it put me off putting anything magnetic on there again. I've since grown to prefer my 'naked' door. I would even say that it seems more mature to keep it bare, but as I had simply moved the magnets onto the seldom-used-oven door, well....
We have a few things on the side, but nothing (but one large ( 8x8) and attractive sunburst magnetized thingie) on the front. We used to have a bunch of magnets but when we had to get a new fridge (the old one died at the holidays last year) we found we liked the tidy new face. The magnets from the previous fridge are now on brightening up the basement freezer.
I would never put anything on my fridge. I hate the way that looks.
I love my fridge clutter, its filled with funny postcards, magnets and photos ... but its all neatly arranged and every so often I switch it up. It's like my grow-up corkboard from my room growing up.
We have a fridge that won't hold magnets and while it looks better it's pretty useless.
I too, love my mom's magnet covered fridge, but couldn't bring myself to do the same thing.
I'm a former fridge-as-bulletin-board person. It was one of those things I just started doing without even thinking about it because that's the way it was while I was growing up.
Then I got a non-magnetic fridge.
It cramped my style at first but now cluttered fridges make me itchy. OTOH, I like how you can tell quite a bit about a person by what they have stuck to their fridge door.
I too used to have the world tacked on my fridge. But having decided to declutter, the fridge was the first place I started with. To be honest I like it much better now. To each his own style.:)
Pristine for me. All that trashy looking junk goes inside the pantry door where I mounted a cork board. (In my old house, it was inside a cupboard door near the phone.) Not having kids might be a big element in my choice...
I de-cluttered the fridge when I moved. I sent to Goodwill all but one magnet, a red bird in flight. I see it as art. So far I have tacked up one pizza flyer with a short expiration date, and that's it. I prefer a clean refrigerator. I also de-cluttered my kitchen counters. Coffee bar and that is it. It makes the kitchen a breeze to clean, too.
I know their passe as hell, but we have a bunch of magnetic poetry sets on our fridge- the therapist one, the spooky one, and the art one. I feel like, since their all the same thing, they don't add a lot of clutter, and they give me something to fidget with when I'm in the kitchen waiting for something to be ready. Plus, it gives people a chuckle when they inevitably congregate in the kitchen.
I hate a cluttered fridge. My former roommates covered every available space with tacky magnents, wedding invites for weddings long past, and post cards. I hate, hate, hated it. Now that they're gone my fridge is a calm place of order! There's the dry erase board for the shopping list and the post its to copy the list and take it with you, and nothing else. It's wonderful.
I have things displayed on my fridge, but I'd hardly call it cluttered. I take great care to curate the images on my fridge (taken from design magazines and other places) and display them by using magnet paper so everything has a clean edge.
My front doors are not magnetic, but they are cluttered...with fingerprints. That is the downside to stainless steel, but honestly it doesn't bother me all that much.
Only half of one side of my fridge is exposed...and that is magnetic. I stick coupons on it and the various magnets I've collected over the years.
Cluttered fridges make me nervous (who can find anything on one that is completely papered?!), but I still like to have some things out. The front of our fridge has: the current season's to do list, my honey's daily honey do list, current party invitations, and three DIY folders with magnetic backs to corral most things. Our reusable/erasable grocery list and cleaning list hang out on the side that's hidden from the kitchen entrance. We still end up losing some coupons, but it looks much neater.
I have a stainless steel fridge and its not magnetized. I don't mind because we keep my daughters art work on the front of the dishwasher :)
I have a stainless steel fridge with magnetic sides. There is nothing on the front. On one side which faces the doorway into the kitchen I have magnet souvenirs from cities, museums and attractions. I have them neatly arranged at eye level. The other side faces cabinets, and the stove is on that wall, so I have magnetic spice containers and things like a magnetic bottle opener and pot holders on that side as a continuation of the backsplash area.
When I was younger I used to like a pristine fridge with nothing on it. Now, I rather like having carefully selected, meaningful or useful items on it.
our fridge is covered with magnetic poetry (mainly to cover the rust spots..)
I use the front of my refrigerator to display my postcard collection. They're arranged neatly and I use tiny magnets so the display looks pretty good. Cluttery stuff like a notepad for grocery lists and decorative magnets go on the side.
My fridge is a basic, beige box so it's not like it was beautiful enough to leave alone.
I had a cluttered fridge until one "life expert" suggested that it invited general clutter. I pared it down to the magnet board (great for grocery lists), a cat photo and a few magnets with important numbers like the vet and pet poison hotline.
We also collected some gorgeous magnets from a few art museums in NYC. Those tactfully hold up the few items and it's just right.
i have a bare fridge. i used to put magnets and pictures and even favorite recipes on there, but i find that it's easier to clean and maintain when there's nothing i have to take off.
i'm all for a cluttered, but organized fridge. its the perfect place to post inspiring, pretty, favorite images because its a place where you're bound to see it at least during your three meals a day!

Oh, my fridge is cluttered to high heaven, but a lot of the stuff up there is there for a reason. And, you know what? I love my refrigerator magnets (some stupid, some not), and don't think it would feel right without them.
It totally depends on what type of space you have...
Some people put art on walls. A fridge can be a type of art- if you are in a studio or some other limited space, its an expression of you.
Not sure that I would do it in a more formal house, but in my 20-something urban condo it works for me.
I can't stand an overly decorated/cluttered frig, I've lived with people who weren't happy unless there was a 100 things on it, when I got my first place on my own, my frig was magnate free for the first 5 years. Now I have my Paul Frank magnets, pop art goodness in moderation.
I won't be cluttering anytime soon, my stainless steel fridge won't allow for any magnets which is fine by me. I am learning to declutter- and that alone feels great, one step nearer to my not being a packrat.
My fridge has always been completely clean but I bought a magnetic week to view calendar last week that is about 12' square. That's up there now and I'm still undecided as to whether it needs another home.
I have a few images on the Fridge- but they are spectacularly sexy & beautiful and I curate them quarterly.
An unadorned fridge = no sense of humor.
Especially if it's stainless steel with no magnets on the side.
Seriously, if there's one place in your home where you can toss out the idea of a "thesis" and of "editing" it should be your refrigerator. The stakes are really not that high, people. Show some personality.
I have a single, big, flat magnet on my fridge; I regard it as a slate. That the one I write my "ingredient of the week" on (mango vinegar anyone ?). And that's all. I don't like cluttered fridge, especially the ones in kitchen. I hate looking at a busy fridge at 7 in the morning, it stresses me too much. I know it's going to be a busy day, but I really love my 20 minutes-breakfast to be a calm end of a good night's sleep. So, no music, no tv (we don't have any anyway), no visual clutter, and (we the renovations are over), a soothing, bright, clean and happy kitchen !
I have a very open plan main area so having things on my fridge looks cluttered. I like to keep most of it in the study (which is 2 steps from the fridge...) but invitations, (or a photo or note that makes me smile) go on the side where it can be seen but doesn't look 'messy'. I admit we also have a bar fridge in the garage that's covered (...... and I mean covered) in stickers, magnets, kids drawings and photos. I think that it really depends on how it makes you feel. :)
How would I keep up with those chip clips? I use them to keep all sorts of things closed...and I only buy them in magnetic so I can put them on the fridge so they are easy to find. Good side is I can clip a note to the fridge easily. Plus I think I have a magnet of the general landscape of every where I've been.
My kitchen is very organized, clean, and nothing on the counters. However the top front of my fridge is covered with travel magnets and small photos. Ying and yang. I don't like papers or anything that has movement or not neatly placed and secure. It's like a picture/art.
There is nothing hanging off the doors of the fridge, and only two things on the side, both calendar-related, small, and entirely magnetic (no flopping edges or sliding magnets). I do serious work in the kitchen (that's how it feels, anyway, having to keep everyone's food preferences in mind while making food that is nutritious, delicious, and in some way interesting for me to make) and I don't want stuff getting in my way.
I think an nonmagnetized fridge is a sacrilege! I can understand why some people like a clean bare fridge but I have to have my photo booth pics, vintage postcards, illustrations, and valentines & photos. I love being able to rearrange the collage and I am so happy seeing the Lynda Barry comic everyday! To me, an empty fridge front would mean I had a lobotomy and I am sincerely that dramatic about it. I do have areas in my house that are minimal, so it's all in balance.
i collect magnets from all of my travels...so of course the perfect place to display is the fridge!!! DUH!!
Growing up my mom always put lots of magnets from traveling, etc everywhere. So I used to keep lots of stuff on mine when I moved off to college. As I've gotten older I started hating that idea. I would have roommates who would want to slap big magnets on things. My last roommate insisted on having this huge UT longhorns magnet on our dishwasher despite the fact we were long out of school & lived in a house with a really nice custom kitchen. Annoyed me so much. My boyfriend and I have a pretty black fridge now in our first house. (I am over the stainless look so that was first thing to go in our new house. hehe). He tries to keep things on it but I just take them off. So our compromise thus far has been he can keep a couple clips on the side where they aren't as noticable & a bottle opener magnet. But I am working on him.
My fridge is a gallery for postcards and photobooth photos--it makes me happy!
I'd deal, but it is very useful to be able to post recipes, etc.
I also don't mind a neat display. And a relationship is about compromise--the boy loves to collect magnets, postcards, beer labels, etc. on travels.
What are those long things hanging off the fridge in Photo #3?
ummm...
I guess I'll be reorganizing the front of my fridge tonight.
You guys are intense!
I was always a strict "nothing on the fridge" kind of person until recently when we hung up birthday cards our nephews had made for my husband. Somehow that just seems perfect for the fridge.
I haven't had a magnetic fridge for years, but I painted the edge of my back door with magnetic primer before the final coat, so that's where my magnets live.
One of my favorite things to do when I go to other people's houses is look at their fridge decor, however. It's always fun and quirky.
Our fridge is the first thing you see when you walk in. It was covered with photos of our friends and family in neat magnetic frames. I took everything off when our house was on the market and Every Single Person who came in commented how they missed all the smiling faces.
Now that our house is under contract the children's artwork "clutters" it. I couldn't be happier.
woah I didn't know you could have a non-magnetic fridge. Anything that is steel will hold a magnet. Do people have plastic refrigerators? Weird.
Mine was covered with that magnetic poetry which gets on my nerves, it's just too messy. Sometimes magnets remove the paint too :(
I took them all off (painstakingly) and now I'm happy with the white space. For the moment.
On the front I've got 2 magnetic can openers, and 3 magnets - all of which were gifts from my sister. And that's it, anything more is too cluttered for me. I think no magnets at all looked cold/sterile in my kitchen full of stainless steel appliances.
I love the stuff on my fridge. I have pictures of friends, funny magnets, my favorite teams. It's one of the first things I do when I move because it makes it feel more like home.
If anything, I think I tend to be too much of a purger in general and my place can end up feeling a little bare and cold.
So I embrace my cluttered fridge, which holds takeout menus, many photos (a fave being my rural aunt surrounded by her blue-ribbon-winning produce!), hockey ticket stubs, shopping lists, a drawing of myself as a book-reading fairy (made my a 6-year old niece who is now in college), among other things. It's not beautiful and it's certainly not curated, but I like the warmth & fun of it.
To each his own, of course, though! But I do notice friends and family always seem to like to peruse what's there--just like I enjoy perusing other people's fridges when I'm at their home!
My fridge has stainless doors, but black sides. It's the perfect thing for me. Where it sticks out past the cabinets I can post whatever I want, but I'm limited to that space where it isn't as much of an eye-sore...like the doors. The doors are just nice sleek stainless. :-) Love my fridge.
I prefer a clutter-free fridge, but I did stick a few favorite magnets to my steel filing cabinet in my home office.
The nice thing about being an adult is that if I want, I can eat my dessert before dinner and that is my choice.
But where the outside of my fridge is concerned,
I enjoy being a kid.
I would never WANT to live with a non-magnetic fridge. My fridge is my own personal art gallery/family album/inspirational bulletin board.
Every so often I change things around(new photos, art postcards, fortunes from chinese cookie(some of the best advice I have ever received came from fortune cookies) and whatever inspires me at the moment.
No "adult fridge" for me.
I enjoy my fridge as a space for creative expression.
NB. the inside however is clean, organized and uncluttered......just the way I like it!
I always wondered who bought those hideous magnets I see in tourist stores when I travel. Now I know.
I dislike clutter of any kind...but especially on the fridge. Don't have it in my house. It sets my nerves on edge in other's houses.
I don't see why a person would decorate an appliance. People don't stick junk up on dishwashers or ovens or washers or dryers. Why is it the refrigerator that people are so attracted to? Is it the size? That is the very attribute that makes me want have the fridge blend in as much as possible. Why make it even more obtrusive by using it as a place to hang junk?
Oh well, as my sainted mother used to say: The world would be a boring place if we were all the same.
To me it's no different from decorating a wall - I like a few interesting or personally meaningful items, art, photos, but not too much clutter.
everyone loves to explore fridge displays. my photographer friend says she wants to do a collection of photos of people's fridges. Also, did you guys read the piece in the NYT about family time? I'll never forget one of the things the reporters found: that in people's homes their fridge was an excellent indication of the clutter in the rest of the house.
fascinating...
Heck yes! Especially if you rent and have a stupid, ugly, dated (not cool dated, either) fridge... fill 'er up. Neatly. With funny stuff.
I also love stupid tourist magnets. My boyfriend's mom started the collection and at first I thought it was really tacky and lame, but it grew on me.
interesting conversation. I use the side of my fridge to hold family photos and some art. it's become especially useful since we have lots of family that live far away and my 2 year old loves to look at everyone everyday. i keep it really neat with tiny magnets so I really don't feel like it's "cluttered." but, the front has become a breeding ground for all kinds of old invitations and junk. . . looks like I'm off to declutter.
We argued about the fridge door for years. I loved the photos on the refrigerator door, but my spouse didnt like the clutter and mess. .
One day I came home to a refrigerator door covered with our favorite photos in a single large magnetic photo frame. Surprise, surprise. Our whole door was a great big photo frame.
This large magnetic frame measures 16" X 24" and holds photos of all sizes. Found it online.
We liked it so much we now have 2.
All the photos are neatly arranged in a large magnetic collage display in a neat and protective frame.
This is the most viewed scrapbook page that I have ever created.
