I think someone should inform Pantone that actually it seems the big color is "yellow" - at least according to OhDeeDoh readers...
Not quite sure what your readers were thinking with their votes for 2 of these winners. The "cheerful nursery" & the "serendipitous nursery" are so not winners after all that I saw submitted. I am surprised by the dark green wall with random colorful placements & in the other, the mix of the wallpaper & the rug are just too much.
ohdeedoh, keep the voting open longer! Although I wish I could, I can't be compulsively checking your site 800 times daily to vote. I love this contest but have missed voting for many of my favorites and for any of the finalists.
Congrats to all of the winners. I am a little surprised but still some great rooms where submitted!
Im dissapointed Samantha's Alice in Wonderland room didnt win anything but congrats to all the winners. Im very happy it came down to all canadian finalists :)
Wow. I'm shocked with these winners...
Congratulations to the winners!
(and I agree, voting should be kept open longer--I got my votes in, but it seemed like a very narrow window)
i am floored by the selection of these winners.
umm, seriously? how did those rooms win? Actually, I was pretty shocked with all the finalists...
I (Spencer's mom) am shocked that anyone feels the need to rain on the proverbial parade of the contestants by expressing their shock & dismay at the finalists or winners. It sometimes seems that in the age of internet anonymity, people have forgotten the adage "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Life's too short.
A friend warned me that in order to enter an online contest one needs thick skin, and she was right.
I BIG, heartfelt, thank you to Ohdeedoh & to the people who voted for Spencer's room - being included in this contest was an honor and placing 3rd was more than I'd hoped for. Congrats to all the finalists & to the winners - all of whom were more than deserving.
Yea the voting is SUCH a short time - it should be open for a week. Maybe if 3-5 entries are posted on a Monday, left to vote all week and then after x amount of weeks, the week winners are put up against each other and so on until it's down the finals. It just seems that the one entry randomly posted just doesn't catch everyone, whereas a week long voting session would likely find ALL your readers, not just those who happen to check on a specific day.
Congrats to all who won - and to everyone, thanks for sharing!
what a great contest! it was so fun getting a peek into all these wonderful rooms. you can tell how hard everyone worked to put together warm, welcoming spaces for their little ones. you should all be proud!
@ Brandyn...WOW!!! Congratulations on winning. Why does it matter to you if everyone likes your design? If you're happy with it, then be happy! Don't look to strangers for validation and don't get nasty if someone does not validate you! I'm not giving any feedback as it clearly is hitting a raw nerve and what i think, one way or the other, should not matter to you. Be happy! Again, congratulations on winning!
Wow. These comments were the least of my expectations after being in the finals. Maxine's mommy, you well deserved 1st place. I was honored to even be selected as a contender in the contest. I adored many of the rooms entered and hoped/voted for them to make it to the finals. Maybe if Ohdeedoh readers really desire "magazine spread" designed rooms, the site should consider the voting to be done by a panel of qualified judges and readers. A sincere congratulations to all the winners. Your hardwork and skill shined. And, thank you to all who voted and saw the "uniqueness" and love that went into Henry's. Also, I would actually love any constructive criticism! -Ashley (Henry's mom)
Maxine's Room is beautiful however, I don't think it fits into this category as Big Color. I'm surprised it won first place.
Congrat's to all the winners. All of the entries were so sweet and thoughtful. It took me almost 4 years to figure out what I wanted to do with my DD bedroom. I finally accomplished it but it was no easy feat.
i so agree with Brandyn's comments above. commenting on how the winners 'should not have won' is so inappropriate and just...mean. congratulations to all the winners! i do hope you can savor your achievement despite the rude comments.
Congratulations to everybody!
It's kind of hard to enter a contest like this and open up such a personal space for everyone to see, and potentially criticize, but I'm glad people do it. I found inspiration in so many of the entries this year that I couldn't even begin to name them all. Some of my favorite rooms didn't even make it into the finals (but I don't like them less because of that!).
Actually, I am not sure why voting went the way it did this year. It seems like in past years there were a couple of stand out entries that received a ton of votes, but the numbers were a lot closer this time. I thought there were some fabulous rooms in the finals though, and I was surprised some of them didn't get more votes than they got. I certainly wasn't expecting to win, but I am excited that I did, and I appreciate everybody who voted for my room or left comments for me on the voting pages.
Also Ana, once again, you are too kind! Thank you. :)
I also agree with Brandyn's response. Dissenting opinion is part of productive discussion but only if those opinions are thoughtful. It's easy to leave a throwaway comment if you're anonymous. A refresher of AT's comment policy (which also includes personal attacks, and I assume self righteous condescending ones are covered by that policy too) http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/main/commentpolicy.
Congrats to the winners, and thanks to everyone for putting a precious part of yourselves out into the world for us to look at and learn from.
I agree with Brandyn. I wanted to say something yesterday when I saw the first 2 reponses. However, I chose not to "stir the pot". I am glad someone said something about the rudeness.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the expression of opinion be it positive or negative. This contest was a "design contest" and not a support group to get validation for your efforts. I post certain questions and entries on this site because I genuinely want the constructive criticism of design-minded people whose opinions I've come to value and trust. I had an entry in this contest too, which was exciting in and of itself. I obviously didn't win (nor did I expect to), but I was so interested in the feedback I got, the negative as well as the positive.
I think it goes without saying that all these rooms were created with love for some very special people by those who love them most. That's not the point of this contest though.
There's a difference between a thoughtfully written critical comment and some of the stuff posted here. And I think the comments about looking for validation are an exaggeration and unfair.
But a bunch of nasty people post on these boards. Congratulations to all the winners.
Brandyn, I think your room is lovely.
I have not followed this contest, and I did not vote at all this year. But I'd have voted for these happily. They look genuine, real, and fun.
Years ago, a contestant (a "real designer" of course) created at least 3 screen names for himself to make rude comments on other finalists designs. Similar nastiness has been creeping into contests for several years, and spreading out to everything else eventually.
Try not to worry about it. Also, there are other sites geared toward real human beings instead of design trolls, when you need a change. The nasty commenting is a big part of why I, who was a member nearly since the site started, visit AT sites once/month instead of once/day.
I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing your opinion, as long as it is respectful and explained. While I love the winner, I really dislike the two runner-ups. The corral room is nothing special and the yellow feels aggressive to me. The entry I disliked the most was the green room, because the green in itself isn't my cup of tea, and the art on the wall felt random and too busy for me. The kelly (?) green is so present, it doesn't say welcome to me.
On the other hand, I create a baby blue nursery for my son that some people find cold. He loves it, my husband loves is, I love it, and that is all that mattered.
The contest was really interesting. I loved seeing different ideas and really got inspired by some of the rooms; the Tintin's one still is a top favorite and got my vote.
I 100% agree with you Loora! There's nothing wrong with expressing your opinion as long as it's respectful and explained. I believe some people take things too personally simply because you don't like their style. We each have our own tastes. Why not embrace our differences instead of attacking them?
Hmmmmm I did not mean my statement to be nasty at all. I actually was surprised these won. I wasn't drawn to any of them. It is my opinion that there were much better ones. I just assumed that the voting was potentially blown out of proportion by people with more friends they recruited to vote than actual legitimate opinions. The kelly green, in my opinion was too brash and harsh with random art. The yellow coral was tacky and the yellow was too invasive for me. The winner itself had nothing special that jumped out for me. At. All. As for the old adage "if you have nothing to say don't say it" I think that is ridiculous- this is a contest not an ego stroking platform. You have to take the good with the bad. Obviously those of us who disagreed with your designs were in the minority so take heart in that.
It's also interesting to note that the rugs are the same in the winner and the international winner...
It's amazing what resonates with people, isn't it? I voted for Spencer's room and the Cheerful Nursery Retreat, along with a few others.
Congratulations to all the winners!
I'm new to the site and from an international newbies point of view the only thing that stood out to me compared to previous winners were that the colours (we spell it that way in Australia) were more subdued this year than in previous years. I was expecting winners that had made bolder colour choices to be up there but obviously the majority have spoken and again well done to the winners. There were so many inspiring rooms in the selection process - congratulations to all you are all!
