The rules of the challenge are simple: find a covetable holiday item at a retailer, and then find a similar one for less on Etsy. Take a look at what I found.

I like so many of the Etsy versions better!
OR BUY DIRECTLY FROM THE ARTIST.... and cut out the middle men

Thanks for this great reminder! I just found an antler candelabra like the one I've been eyeing from Pottery Barn.
Agree..the ESTY versions are way better.
Hey there. Last Christmas, I hosted a cookie swap and one of our 'activities' was to make our own Mason Jar snow globes. They are super easy to put together and fun. You can find the mini trees and fake snow at any craft store this time of year. The rest of the details I found around the house/craft bin.
I just bought a set of vintage brandy snifters on Etsy, similar to these for $27.00 (Normally, I would have sent you the link to the actual puchase but it's gone).

These are great. Zingsarah, were there any special instructions to making the Mason Jar snowglobes? I need a new gift idea for this season and I love the ones from Etsy...but I prefer to make myself. I found the German glitter and the snow online already...but was curious if you had any details to add. thanks!
I'm a bit stumped as to why the challenge would stipulate that the Etsy items need to cost less. Why should a genuine vintage, or artisan handmade item be cheaper than a store-bought equivalent?
I understand loving a bargain (I practically live in flea markets and thrift stores), but - particularly with the handmade pieces - it's a little heartbreaking to me that they would be seen as a place to get a deal relative to retail.
Just google, there are many websites that share tutorials:

Good luck!
Thank you! This IS an Etsy artist and a talented one at that. Don't buy from a bad Etsy knock off!
@hippopo - wouldn't you be more stumped as to why anyone would pay $40 for a Mason jar snow globe? I think vintage items can be worthy of a heftier price tag too, but I also think anthropologie happens to be wildly overpriced.
Looks like fun! re: #6, if you live near an ikea, you can just get a few of their sheepskins (which do vary in size; I got one that is huuuge and costs the same as one half its size) for less than the faux fur skirt. I think ikea used sheepskins (unenhanced) as tree skirts in their store displays last year, actually....
