A recent tour the home of some good friends yielded the first picture above — an Expedit TV unit cleverly modified to hold their record player and record collection. They raved about the amount of storage the tall unit provides, and how ideally suited it was to their small space — no other record storage system would fit. As often as the versatile Expedit has been profiled on Apartment Therapy, we thought it was worth the effort to round up some of our favorites as inspiration.
Our first batch of Expedit bookcases in action come from the Apartment Therapy DC group on Flickr:
1. Yoannah created a wonderful reading nook using the largest Expedit
2. Suzy8Track used a smaller unit to display her collection of vintage 8 tracks and players
3. DomoArigato put together a wonderful studio space with tons of storage
4. JJBurke combined books, electronics and vintage camers on to create a vibrant shelving unit
Our second group are pure inspiration for folks looking to pump their storage up a notch:
5. What's not to love with this magnificent hack involving an IKEA Expedit and a welded steel frame?
6. Eva van Ireland's incredible wall of stacked storage is a bibliophile's dream.
7. Here's an Expedit effectively partitioning a small studio while providing tons of storage.
8. This creative hack really pumps up the style and shape of the Expedit to a new level.

Nomade Express Slee...
love this style so much!
Number 6 is just amazing! I really like it. It looks like custom built-ins.
I also think number 5's idea is very creative.
I have that 2XL!
I have the 2x4 Expedit and in the 2 years I've had it it's been a bookcase, table, clothes storage, and office supply station. I would love to get the huge 5x5 if I had the room.
lisacase: 2XL's are the best! Do you still have the tapes for it?
rashamy: I too wish I could get the 5x5...perhaps my next place.
The first one in row 2 is so nice.
I wish the TV unit came in black.
I love love love #6 and #8. If only I had the space ...
I have two 2x4 units end to end (with one end panel removed in the center so as not to double up, and to fit the space.) Mine are filled with the drawer and door inserts to hide my craft supplies in the dining room... the top works as a buffet. I'm surprised not to see more use of the drawer and door inserts. I think they are great for clutter coverage!
Does anyone know if these will support a collection of vinyl albums? Anyone tried it? Considering it for boyfriend's record storage. thanks in advance!
@Jeffery: in Germany it does - and you can also see it in #1 - or is that not what you mean?
I've climbed mine...and at 250lbs, I'm NOT light! The record collection should be fine!
I reinforced my 2x4 and I use it as a fish tank stand, and occasionally as a seat.
We have a collection of maybe 200 records stored in a couple of Expedit cubes. They fit perfectly, and the shelves are definitely sturdy enough to hold the weight.
thanks guys for the quick response on the record shelves ! Can't wait to get organized- now if I can get Ikea to deliver to Denver..that is another question.
I want one to go to my ceiling since i am a totally book lover thanks AT!
bisbee, Ikea shipping and handling is SUPER expensive. When I wanted an expedit for my records we went online and shipping was something absurd like $200 --about the same price as the expedit we wanted. So instead we drove from Las Vegas to california and picked it up ourselves.
every time i see that image in #6 i get freaked out that it will collapse. it looks awesome and i want it, but the expedit is made out of glorified cardboard. can one unit really support 2 others on top of it?
I'm very curious: how exactly was the first picture "modified"? After looking for days at entertainment centers, I've found that that is EXACTLY what I want. If I could do the modifications myself, that'd be great, or if I have to pay someone to do it, that's fine too...but I'm in love with that unit (that's what she said). Any information would be great, so help me apartmenttherapy.com...you're my only hope...thank you!!!!
