Comfortable chairs are an essential when setting up a new home. When in your search for the perfect place to flop down, look no further than The Flotsom Furniture Works. This Etsy retailer offers hand-made, custom Mid-Century inspired furniture pieces that look just as good as the stuff you see at the larger retail giants, but for a fraction of the cost.
Nick Sario knows the importance of the meaning of the phrase “out with the old and in with the new.” Frustrated with both his day job and the state of the hand-me-down furnishings in his Chicago apartment, Sario was ready for a change in more ways than one. Fueled by good ole’ fashioned “single-minded obsession and wild desperation,” Nick took matters into his own hands, tearing apart his furniture, reclaiming third-hand vintage furniture pieces and eventually becoming a master furniture craftsman.
Thus, The Flotsam Furniture Works was born. In his collection, Sario works with repurposed materials whenever possible, creating unique, original designs and giving new life to old vintage items. Nick’s work is a true Etsy gem, as each piece is hand-crafted for you, making the furniture more special than similar pieces you may find in the larger main-stream shops – and at the amazingly low price of around $500.

Such an inspiring story!
"Amazingly low price of $500"?
Ask me again in 5 years. That is something to save up for, NOT a bargain. Jeez.
They gorgeous and durable. I can definitely see myself spending more than $500 for such a timeless piece. I bet shipping from Chicago would be horrendous though.
Wow, wish I'd checked more carefully before posting. Looks like shipping is included throughout the continental U.S.
These are beautiful pieces and he does great work, but saying that that is an amazingly low price seems pretty insane. Although frankly, any time I see a post on here about working "on a budget" I always end up horrified about what people apparently think of as low-cost, so maybe it's just me.
I fully support the use of the phrase, "amazingly low price," because it is a crazy good price for that kind of chair. Try to find something comparable that is brand new and somewhat custom. No, this isn't a cheap ikea price, but it isn't cheap ikea furniture. I think it is a bargain and hope he's charging enough to make a living.
BrianneA--I think shipping is included in the price.
I think $500 for a custom chair IS a bargain, provided the craftsmanship is good and it lasts. I've paid that much and more for crappy furniture that sags in a matter of weeks.
BrianneA, you said they're durable - can you clarify why you think that? I'm a novice furniture shopper who's make way too many mistakes (particularly with chairs and sofas) that I hope to rectify with future purchases.
I agree that it's an inspiring story and they really are lovely pieces. Kudos to you, Nick Sario!
I can't wait until I order one of these chais for my family room.
the color looks really navy more than black...
