One of our favorite stops at Art Chicago was Catherine Edelman's booth. The River North gallerist has a great eye for photography, and for us Julie Blackmon is the pick of the litter. When we saw her Domestic Variations serious we actually laughed out loud. Apartment Therapy readers will appreciate her sense of humor...

A working mother of three, Blackmon is herself the oldest of nine children. We think it might have something to do with her funny and chaotic view of family life.

Julie Blackmon's photos say something that can't quite come across in words, but instantly resonates with people who are connected to family and home. Their mix of humor, stress, beauty, and just a little bit of chic design is right on.

Blackmon uses her own children, friends, and relatives in her photos, and the personalities of family members are very present.

Prices are in the low-to-mid thousands. For more of Julie Blackmon's work at Catherine Edelman Gallery (300 West Superior Street), click here.

"mix of humor, stress, and beauty" -- perfect word choice. I love american gothic and time-out... the irony totally makes these pictures!
These photos are fantastic! thank you for sharing.
hmm, I am just not getting these. They're kind of cute and a tad bit funny but they just look "off" to me- like a bad photoshop job.
Yes, they definitely are "off", but that's what makes them art rather than examples of lifestyle photography that you can buy from stock sites. I like them!
I laughed out loud too :-)
these are really great photos, very creative framing and setting. and like the comment above mine, the 'off' factor is what makes this art.
These are too rich!! I want all of them!
The artist has a sense of humor matching mine....I love her!!
