Introducing Barbara Cohen's works in cork.

I was in Provincetown (the very tip of Cape Cod) last week for work and lucked out with beautiful Indian Summer weather. I spent my last day strolling down Commercial Street, poking into the galleries and the local art museum. There was one artist I saw twice, both at the museum and a new gallery down the street – Barbara Cohen, who is making sculptures and relief collages with the loveliest material, Sesbania, a type of cork. Take a look...

Here are few of these close up.

In the artist's words. "My Sesbania Sculptures are contradictions of unstoppable tension and stillness - simple pieces with major complexities. The luscious cream-colored freestanding sculptures have an energetic motion and rhythm born from cutting Sesbania, a natural wood product, used as corks, imported from the wetlands outside Hanoi. The work, like me, wants to be understood and unadorned."

Cohen also painstakingly assembles these slices of cork into sculptural forms. Here are two, the ball sculpture below is table-top size.

This other was constructed as a long cylinder and then cut into pieces. It was displayed up high in the rafters of the gallery. (I didn't catch the title of this one)

Close Up

I also really like these two drawings/paintings on raw canvas, simply tacked to the gallery walls, that certainly take their inspiration from the shapes of the cut sesbania. (again, sorry no titles/prices)
