Introducing Ruslan Trusewych

I was introduced to Trusewych's work by my friend Alice who was helping to "host" at his studio during a recent Open Studios evening for Hunter College MFA students.

I was particularly taken with the "standard <=> deviation" series of miniature sculptures created from plastic and metal connectors, fittings, tubing, all sourced from the hardware store. Each object is displayed in its own plastic "for sale" style packaging, similar to how the components of these sculptures are sold.

In the artist's words, "I locate this work within the paradox of identity: different sameness. How does one assert its individuality when inclusion in a community demands similarity?"

And then, there are other meditations on connections that take the form of blueprint-like drawings, webbing and mapping and connecting shapes and ideas….
