Allow me to introduce you to Stanford Kay -- a painter for the avid readers among us. Or better yet, for those of us who love the look of our bookshelves and adore organizing and reorganizing them.
Or even better, for those of us who don't HAVE any bookcases...
I first saw this work at the Affordable Art Fair this fall -- and believe they are painted to bookcase scale. This series, called the Gutenberg Variations, are painted in acrylic on canvas in a vast array of color palettes, ranging in size from 30x 24, to 60" x 48".

One couple I know, when they moved in together, couldn't agree on how to organize their books. The brilliant solution? Organize them by color! Their bookshelves are beautiful bands of red... white...
golds...

And what is more facinating than browsing someone else's bookshelves?
Oh, the things they reveal...

Get out to Beacon and see his work this weekend at the Van Brunt Gallery's Group Show 2 up til Feb 27 at 460 Main Street Beacon, NY (845.838.2995 - www.vanbruntgallery.com).
He also has a terrific website - Stanfordkay.com -- where you can see more paintings as well as a series called "Life Signs" that was installed in Union Square Park Fall of 03.

I don't know what to say, except I just love these. Outstanding, in my book.
I.
WANT.
I like the paintings a lot, but my wall space is already covered by my real books. Book piles are already accumulating on the floor.
Thanks for posting this. There is a graphic quality about them that is really captivating. And the colors are lovely. While on the topic, I've been hunting for bookcases since whenever... would love to hear some options!
BRILLIANT!
