Introducing Suzi Matthews, a collage artist with a passion for numbers. I dropped by my favorite shop, TAUK, in Montauk this past weekend and these collages were the first thing to catch my eye. TAUK is host to many an eye-catching object: beautiful books, natural forms like sea shells and driftwood, ceramics, glass, frames and super cool clothing too. Everything about the place is fresh, unusual and of impeccable taste. A great place for AT-readers to nose around; and a beautiful setting for these collages.

Every little piece in these collages is a clipping of a printed number. I started to wonder what the books in the artist's house looked like – did they have page numbers any longer? Turns out her source material can run from the impersonal — magazines, catalogues and junk mail — to the more personal, clipping from her family-business catalogues of electronic-components (guitar effect pedals and vacuum tubes for high-end stereo systems, in case you are wondering).

She did her first number collage about 5 years ago, and hasn't exhausted the topic yet. I love the range of patterns she can achieve with these numerical units. In the artist's words: "Each work grows without a predetermined plan, and evolves organically, almost as if it tells me where it would like me to take it."

Some are modular, and can be combined to make a larger work of art.

Prices range from $250 to $2200 – so there is Suzi Matthews gem for every pocketbook. Try to see them in person; the experience of viewing them close-up and far away is quite different and I think important to enjoying the work. Inquiries? Please contact the artist via email.
