The Hidden Home Theater Tour

Tech Tour

Name: Model home at 208 West 96th Street
Location: New York, New York
Size: 3 bedroom, 3 bath

At first glance, this NYC condo model home seems nearly devoid of any obvious technology except for one strangely off-center soundbar speaker. But upon closer inspection, the space reveals to be a space where the technology has been thoughtfully incorporated and designed to hide away as much as possible: an iinconspicuous 1080p projector, a crumb vent hidden at the floor of the kitchen for cleanup duty, a virtual doorman system for wireless monitoring and entry control and a media closet to hide all the gear away from view...

Unplggd Tour Survey:

My/our style: a contemporary boutique condominium. Luxe warm touches like fur rug and chocolate brown couch balance the sleek clean lines of modern kitchen and dining room.

The inspiration for my home office/home theater: a hidden home theater masked as a sophisticated modern living room.

Favorite element in your space: all the hidden and automated tech features, like the built-in floor VacPan crumb vent.

Biggest challenge in designing my space: Since this is a model home the design needed to appeal to a wide audience but exude character and glamour with out over shadowing unique built in features of the condo.

Best advice about organizing or incorporating tech into the home: Keep the unsightly out of view. If renovating take the extra time/cost to run wiring behind sheet rock, install surround sound speakers and state of the equipment. Incorporate technologies upgrades into the budget.

Home Tech Hardware:
Upon entry: Virtual Doorman is monitored 24/7 and can even recognize residents as they approach to let them into the building. Packages can be received by granting access to either the refrigerated closet or valet closet for deliveries while the elevator and all other access points remained locked.

Elevator: Otis Gen2 elevator is environmentally friendly using 50% less energy and the revolutionary flat belts instead of traditional steel ropes allows for the lift mechanism to be encased in the shaft eliminating the need for a separate motor room on the roof - giving more space to be dedicated to a roof top terrace.
