Dear Readers,
After eight days of vigorous voting*, this year's winner for Best Home Design Blog is:
Bloggers: Sherry & John PetersikYoung House Love!
Location: Richmond, Virginia
Blogging Since: 2007
Please check out their awesome blog and thank you for taking part in helping us to discover and celebrate the best in the home blogosphere. Young House Love will now join our pantheon of Best Blogs, and we'll see you next year in January.
Best, Maxwell
* Please note that to counter vote stuffers, we removed any instances where we saw an extreme amount of votes from one unique IP address. We did allow for instances like universities, where there could be many people on one IP, and we did examine IP locations. We applied the exact same criteria to each blog and vote entered in the contest.

It's our way of surveying the blogosphere each year for the best new home design blogs and sharing what we find. It's not so much a competition as a celebration of the richness and awesomeness of shelter bloggers around the world. Join us, share your favorites and check out the ones you don't know. There are five categories: Home Design, Home Tech, Kids @ Home, Green Home & Home Cooking. None of our blogs or past winners are eligible (see below).
The prizes? $50 to the winner of each category and lots of traffic as we publish the five winners in a big congratulatory post across our network on February 4th. We want to elevate good home blogs, see who you love and gain awareness for the home niche.

What's the schedule?
1. Add your favorite home blogs
January 18-25 (until midnight EST)
2. Vote on the top nominees
January 26-February 3 (until 6pm EST)
3. Winners announced!
February 4
What happened to 2010?
We usually run the Homies from December into January, but due to technical work we needed to get done, we pushed this year into January, which means we lost the 2010 window. We're going to call the winners this year the 2010-11 Winners.
What happened to the fancy interface we had last year?
It will be back next year, but we had to give it a break while we rebuild the backend of our system. We're doing a lot of track work right now.
How does it work?
Nominations for the best blogs in these categories are collected all week, we then choose the top six favorites, and then you all get one powerful vote starting next week.
Who is eligible?
Any blog, amateur and professional in the homespace in the five categories listed below. Past winners and Apartment Therapy blogs are not eligible.
What is the homespace?
It's the media space dedicated to folks who love their homes, and it concerns decor, cooking, entertaining, raising kids, working at home and a whole host of green issues. We're willing to think broadly, but, remember, we're not concerned with things like cars, restaurants, the stock market and Hollywood gossip.
How many blogs can I nominate?
As many as you wish.
How many new favorite blogs can I discover?
As many as your brain can handle before bursting.
When do we vote?
After a week of nominations, we'll collect up all your input and sort them down to the top six contenders. On Wednesday, January 26th we'll post these top six for a week so that you have plenty of time to see them and vote. With one week of nominating and over one week of voting, we should have a good turnout.
Can we vote more than once?
Not in any one category, but you certainly can vote in all five categories.
Can we encourage our friends to vote (for us, even)?
Yes. Not only can't we stop it, we know that the web is a community and word of mouth is how it works.

I wish you were more clear on "new home design blogs". Most of the finalists are 3-4 year old blogs. What exactly is "new"?
Was this rated by how many times a blog was nominated by someone? I couldn't find my recommendation in the submission list!
The Design Confidential is my fav...so helpful!
I am confused about the top 8 i thought this was about designers not wanna bees who make up a thousand emails to get their self voted in and use stolen ideas!! i like designers with their own ideas not borrowed by others sites! So though it wasnt my original vote I vote for Young house love because they are original with fresh takes!
And just like that, they've reappeared. OK!
they come and go, anna. i'm not sure what is happening, but maybe it is the traffic? i am trying to view the results and i just have a big blank space.
Slim Paley ! Its that site that keeps on giving, written by a women you wish had been your college room mate.
This final voting process is VERY CONFUSING!!! Is what we type here count as our vote or do we have to vote at the top and click the "submit survey" button? Why not a simple "vote" or "submit your vote" button? Anybody have answers?
Confusing indeed. I can no longer locate a list of finalists that allows you to select one and submit a vote.
Bftf123, same here. In my office we've all been trying to vote, but ads on the page load so slowly that it times out before the poll shows up. This whole page is so confusing, and we're not dummies! First the list of nominees with links, then a survey (which I guess is the voting, even though the "vote below" link goes to the top of the page), then links to other contests, then a huge list of other blogs which were also nominated, then links to all of the blogs that have won every contest in the past, THEN thousands of comments with nominations, and a comments from Maxwell saying "POST SUBMISSION COMMENTS CAN BEGIN HERE" and "FINAL VOTE COMMENTS CAN BEGIN HERE", followed by lots MORE nominations (?) which are probably mean to be votes....
This is all VERY confusing and terribly designed. What a mess! Since the survey (voting?) option never shows up for most of my coworkers, they have no way to even vote.
Too bad for the bloggers who were nominated.
It's unfortunate this forum is being used to slander. This usually means someone is upset because thy didn't make the finals. Sad.
My vote: Young House Love!
My second vote would have been for 7th House On The Left. Loved their post about the canisters they purchased from the Gilmore Girls set and the way they incorporated I Love Lucy into her most recent post. Keep up the good work 7th House On The Left!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you all for your feedback about our voting process this year. To reduce confusion (and make the voting form load faster above), we've just removed all nomination comments. If you would like to vote, please use the form above, which is labeled "Which is your favorite Home Design blog?". We had some technical problems yesterday that kept the form from showing up, but that is resolved now so it should be visible. Thank you for your patience!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope PamsDezines. A bunch of people realize this one person made up a bunch of emails. I am not a blogger and don't have a site. I am just stating s fact you and both know about.
I am not able to "sign in" so that I can make my final vote...for Slim Paley!
woohoo slimpaley go! go! go!
Keep trying to vote M.L. I had to do the same thing in order to vote for 7th House On The Left yesterday. It's almost like the screen freezes. Maybe it would help to log out and back in again.
hey M.L if you are having troubles signing in you can reset your password by going to this link and typing in the e-mail address associated with this site
http://community.apartmenttherapy.com/forgot_password
To me, this isn't even a competition. Door Sixteen is in another stratosphere altogether, in so many ways.
slim paley all the way!
Yep. This is MOST DEF the year for Young House Love! I wish Target would brand a decor line with them. We need a YHL TV show too! Team YHL!
Everything I have been looking for in a blog. I only had to scroll down 1/3 of first page before I was in love! Good luck!
Slim Paley hands down!
How do I vote?
I respect Anna at Door Sixteen for sticking to her no advertisement policy on her blog. (you can read more about her position on advertisement on her FAQ link on her site)
To that end, she didn't bend to mention on her blog about being a Homie finalist. She didn't announce it on her blog and beg for votes, unlike the thirsty finalist who did.
Anna is a real class act! I commend her.
YHL- Go John and Sherry! WHOO HOO!!!!
YHL!! Genuine, real, fresh, creative and talented. Glad they didn't manipulate themselves to the top by copying!
Go Sherry, John, Burger and Clara!
Slim Paley!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have really enjoyed viewing the finalist blogs! There are thousands of bloggers out there now and from time to time we may stumble upon a great blog, but it has been nice to have some of the best grouped together. I've especially enjoyed checking out the finalists. Great blogs! And even a few that didn't the final list! Kudos to Apartment Therapy for making it happen.
After a great week of competition I can see where some have felt a need to discredit others with sly comments. It is the highest form of insecurity and incredibility. Let's continue to enjoy this process without the negative comments. Not cool.
I need to enter this next year - our blog is just taking off http://apdinteriors-blog.com - its words direct from an interior designer, I write it myself - and love to share my tips.
Having great fun reading all the blogs and not sure yet who I will vote for ...
GO YHL. I truly had fun watching blogs I read get nominated by their readers. I agree with daylight above. This competition is about having your readers vote for you based on the fact they truly follow your blog. Not about making up as many emails as you can.
I am excited to see if YHL wins. Or even Door Sixteen...
Great blog list but I must admit I am partial.
Sara Brumfield of the 'Steampunk Home' has virtually defined a burgeoning genre. Go back to her archives to 2007 and you'll see how Sara had brilliantly curated this new style from scratch. There were no signposts or guidlines at the time and the scope of her finds literally established the visual vocabulary of Steampunk.
The Steampunk Home is truly an original in every sense of the word.
Dang it, Apartment Therapy. It would've been mighty kind of you if on your massive list of nominated blogs you would have given the link.
After all, you did make it a criteria for vote submission for your readers to give you the URL to enter their vote.
Hey Daylight,
I don't think there is anything wrong with the bloggers posting their nomination on their blogs, this whole contest is about exposure really (certainly not the $50), and asking their readers to vote for them seems completely fair to me. They are proud to have made it to the final 9, and so they should be!
I also think it's fine if a site chooses to have advertising, some wouldn't be able to operate without it.
Also, I seriously doubt the bloggers are going to the trouble of setting up "multiple e-mail addresses" to generate votes, that seems a bit silly and very time consuming.
These top 9 blogs and many more that never made it to the final 9 are all Fab! Let's keep this positive and fun like it should be!
Very well said, Daylight. Thank you.
Just to set it straight.
I'm not one of Door Sixteen "Homies". I really don't care who wins. I was just making my observation about her blog after reading her interesting philosophy about advertising on her site.
I also read many of the others blogs and saw how some of the nominated blogs were literally begging in quite a distasteful way for their readers to vote for them.
Furtherrmore, I believe at the end of the day the Homie Awards is all about "exposure" mostly for Apartment Therapy.
This is all about AT getting their "exposure" on all the nominated blogs from the bloggers who mentioned that they were either nominated or a finalist. As such, AT gets free viral advertisement for its site and this in turns increase the hits on AT sites and generates growth potential and advertisement revenue.
You're right, the pittance of $50 prize money for some wouldn't even be enough for lunch money.
In all fairness to YHL, I didn't see that she announced being a finalist on her site, but I observe that her site advertises.
Advertising in and of itself is not a bad thing, it's one of the pillars in which capitalism is built and thrives on, isn't it.
I was just pointing out my observation about Door Sixteen's philosphy about writing her blog and sharing her passion not for monetary gain, but out of her willingness to share her passion of blogging about her interest with others.
Lastly, the reason why some of the finalist are begging for votes on their nomination is they know winning could boost their site, including more advertisement revenue.
I and many of my friends chose to open new e-mail accounts in order to vote for our friend's blog in the finals. This was done so we would not begin receiving what we labeled "junk mail" in our everyday accounts. I also know of some older parents and family members who did not have e-mail accounts but wanted to support their family member's blog by voting. It was fun and exciting to see them dive into the world of the World Wide Web:) There's no way anyone can (in good conscience) accuse another of making up e-mails to just get votes. You have no way of knowing the motives and circumstances surrounding their situations. That's ludicrous. Especially on this level of competition! Even if it had been humanly possible the quality of their blog would pale in comparison to the others and the quality of the final 9 speaks for itself. Congrats to all!
let it go Daylight..
CORRECTION!!!
I meant to say, "Very well said, Rockcity." I apologize to Rockcity for my mishap. I completely agree with Rockcity's viewpoint. Let's try this one more time...
Very well said, Rockcity. Thank you.
Excuse me, rockcity.
If you're going to take the time to personalize your comment about something I wrote then I certainly have the right to respond to further clarity my comment.
Moreover, I would appreciate if you would respond to my reply with something other than some condescending command.
I read something today on one of the "Kid's" blogs worth repeating:
" 'When you write a blog you put yourself ‘out there’. There are so many things about blogging I wish I knew when I started it what I know now. As much as I enjoy this little space online, I’ve learned that putting yourself ‘out there’ means not everyone has nice things to say.'"
Hatred and Jealousy are evil beasts.
I commend YHL for not posting about the Homies on their site. They're a full-time blogging couple who have built a huge following over the past few years. They have hundreds of thousands, if not a million hits or more each month. If they made an announcement on their blog, this site would crash! They know their readers are going to vote them the winner by far, even without saying a peep. All of the true home-blogging final nominees are probably fans of YHL and know they're too big to beat too.
I also hardly think it's begging for votes for a blogger to be excited and want to share the news with, and thank their readers. Some of these bloggers are small-time and manage to renovate their homes and blog about it, all while working full-time jobs. Everyone deserves a little luck and good fortune every now and then and this week the good fortune fell on these bloggers. The excitement and enthusiasm shown in their blog posts about the Homies is infectious, let's all get in the spirit too!
At end of the day, this whole contest is just all in good fun. The bloggers get some new readers and we get to discover new blogs. Wasn't that the point afterall? Best of luck to all the bloggers, I think they've all done a fabulous job entertaining us and letting us into their lives.
(And I agree with a previous comments, please link all the nominees, A.T.)
I was getting a bit disappointed looking through all the blogs thinking I don't like any of them, until I came to Young House Love, and saw the post about the cabinet eyes. I literally laughed out loud. What a nice, unpretentious blog.
Tamarind that was a very rude and unnecessary comment, you could have complimented YHL without putting down all the other nominated blogs. If you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything at all......seriously
I think it is kind of funny a few people are so defensive. I applaud those who opened enw accounts and have never visited the world wide web. I am just sayin for those who signed up on every email account possible and made up a few more is just kinda sad. Let your readers vote. Anyone could have done that.
Plus, it negates the overall excitement of the nominations. Wouldn't someone want to win because their readers voted them there?
Just sayin
I am one of those who registered with Apartment Therapy in order to vote for our friends' blog. I was unaware our friends were blogger's until a mutual friend mentioned the contest to me. I have since discovered a whole new world I previously knew nothing about and have so enjoyed exploring it over the past day or so. As a result of this contest, I will now be following our friends' blog as well as a few others. Anyone who understands smart business understands the importance of "NETWORKING" and this contest has done just that. That's what Apartment Therapy is...A NETWORKING SITE!!! Would Apartment Therapy have preferred I NOT register in order to vote for my friends' blog? Absolutely not! Apartment Therapy now has a new subscriber as a result of my desire to vote! That's smart business. Also, as I look at how MANY blogs were nominated, I am amazed how anyone could conceive someone being able to open enough e-mail accounts in order to be one of the top contenders. It's asinine! If this were the case ANY ONE OF THEM could be making enough e-mail accounts at this moment to move ahead of Young House Love and that is obviously NOT happening. "The proof is in the puddin'" as they say. Each of the final nine are impressive and informative blogs and each represent themselves quite well...and jealousy will eat you alive if you let it.
Love it!
To answer the accusation made above: Yes, e-mail accounts were made for a group of family members who didn't have e-mail accounts and for a group of co-workers who were hesitant to vote using their e-mail addresses. No wrong was done. One e-mail account was made for each person who wanted to vote. If our motive had been for them to win, they would have.
I would also like to add that we were encouraged to vote for YHL when all was said and done. YHL is a long time favorite of our blogging friend. She and her husband are excited for them and feel they very much deserve the recognition they are receiving.
We've all been in positions before where we have been frustrated and have had to deal with our emotions, but to judge a person's motives from afar is not using wisdom. To attack and try to hurt publicly is not kind.
Love all the debating. I've been having a good time reviewing blogs I didn't know existed; so the contest has made me happy. I voted for Door Sixteen! Love it and will be a regular visitor. I have an older home and have worked in NYC so I can relate. Others may relate more closely to one of the other nominees.
Go Slim Paley!
I kind of like the debate too. Although, so what, if some of these blogs cheated by making up emails... oh well, it only cheapens their nomination. Plus, chances are their readers will see clear past that and see straight truth.
So Pam, who was your original vote? I think I could guess.
I have a sincere question. What is the purpose of blogging?
I just signed up for the first time although have been reading Apartmenttherapy for quite some time....I did this so that I could say "Door Sixteen all the way" great work and keep up the great work.....best of luck
BillyW I'm not a blogger but I can imagine that blogging provides the writers an avenue to connect with some great people, allows them to exercise their creative side, to share and document their experiences and accomplishments and for some to make money.
Team Slim..
Thank you SBarbara. I never thought about it being a good way to document their experiences.
SLIM PALEY!
BEYOND.
SLIM PALEY.
Just a regular person here chiming in to say how much I adore YHL They have become like my morning coffee. Truly, I can't start my day without them.
Go Youngsters!!!
Slim Paley....so much fun and humor and very entertaining and educational. It is a quick read.
A devoted Reader,
Pat Moller
To me, this isn't even a competition. Door Sixteen is in another stratosphere altogether, in so many ways.
SLIM PALEY!
Whoa! Tom Hanks just tweeted to vote for Slim! Can't go wrong there!
Design blogs are like a box of chocolate, you never know what you gonna get.
Slim paley gets my vote!!!!!!!
I've now checked out all the blogs and they all have something different to offer, and i'm sure each blog probably attracts a completely different following than the next.
my vote is for Slim Paley! (although I wouldn't exactly call her blog a design blog, it definitely has aspects of design but it is totally mixed up with other fun topics.)
A few of her posts made me laugh out loud, I don't think any other blog that I've stumbled upon over the years has had that effect on me.
casting my vote for Slim Paley
Go Slim Paley!
I vote for SLIM PALEY!!!!
Nicely done YHL!! Very well-deserved. And yes, the fact that there was no push to get their readers to vote on their blog did stand out positively to me.
So much pettiness in this thread.
I'm glad YHL won, though I like many of the other blogs nominated as well. I think we can all agree that they're all doing great things, should all be proud to have been nominated, and are all giving us great things to read and see.
Who cares about anything beyond that?
Yay John and Sherry!! Im happy to count these two folks, (and their beautiful baby and pup) as personal friends and design consultants. My two favorite home design sites, AT and YHL all in one!
congrats, YHL!
Interesting...I'm trying to see a trend here. YHL & Slim Paley are polar opposites, however, each one very good at what they do. I am wondering what this says about all of us - the readers...are we becoming more polarized? Just thinking. Is age a factor? What about income? I find this all very compelling.
I found yhl through apartment therapy and must say, i am SO happy they won. Their site is so organized, they explain projects clearly and concisely and provide detailed lists of supplies, costs, etc. I feel like a lot of home design blogs (not all) claim to be just another homeowner writing about their experiences have evolved into something else - using their popularity to get sponsors to furnish their homes, etc. For lack of a better term, yhl keeps it real and makes many home projects seem more attainable for the average young person (like me). Thanks guys. :)
I nominated my blog which didn't even make the list. :(
www.lovehousedesign.com/blog
What the... What am I missing here? I nominated the extensive, fantastic blog "An Indian Summer" http://anindiansummer-design.blogspot.com/ in the home design category. If you do a search for it here, you'll find that my nominating posting comes up...
Yet it's not even on the list??? What the F is up with this? You mean to tell me, the "paint the woodwork grey" kids WON for one of these categories... And yet they don't even INCLUDE this fantastic, creative blog on their "unedited" list of hundreds of submissions?
Something's very awry here.
If apartmenttherapy really rates this stuff at the top of this page as "the best 0f 2011", then obviously I've overestimated this blog, as something really interesting and worthwhile in checking out regularly and contributing feedback to.
It's becoming clearer: These people didn't win this on the basis of any any actual environment design (subject matter) presented within the blog: Rather, they won it on the basis of the blog itself. Actually a quite well-done web-site... but somehow I have the feeling this should be secondary to the actual home design that the site is created as a vehicle for presenting. Call me crazy.
"Interesting...I'm trying to see a trend here. YHL & Slim Paley are polar opposites, however, each one very good at what they do. Yum, chai…Photos are beautiful and like that they made their own grahams.
For me, s’mores are all about having the correct proportions…and these look a little big/unbalanced.company logo design

Where can I read that this home design is the best?
