Name: Brock Harris Real Estate
Location: Silver Lake; Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,830 square feet
Years in business: 11 years

This 3-level loft was originally built by Rob Brill, the drummer for Berlin. When Brock was looking for a space to open his brokerage, he came across the loft for sale and immediately made an offer. Because the street is dual-zoned, the loft and bedrooms now serve as an office for the seven agents of Brock's firm.

It was the loft's 30 foot high ceilings that initially excited Brock, but (in his own words) "the one-ton custom steel rolling platform is architectural masturbation!" Its main purpose is to access high shelves, but of course it is great for showing off to guests. The office even took a group photo on the platform (and no one got hurt!).

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Landlord hipster.

Inspiration: I need to feel inspired coming in every day. My space has to be light, clean, and uncluttered. When I bought it, it was painted dark blue throughout. Took us WAY too long to get it all white inside.

Favorite Element: I like how the hard, metallic shell is offset by all the wood elements, and I love the flashes of color.

Biggest Challenge: The lighting is a nightmare. I have never been able to get a really good lighting scheme going. It's so cavernous and glassy. But, what I have works for now, and for most of the day, we have natural light, which I adore.

What Friends Say: Wow!

Biggest Embarrassment: The bathroom. It's a work of art, but freaks everyone out. I always direct guests to the normal bathroom next door.

Proudest DIY: Maybe this is my biggest embarrassment — I can't even swing a hammer. Proudest moment was hiring affordable professional designers to make it awesome.

Biggest Indulgence: Maps of all kinds. I love them. I'd have 200 if I bought every one I loved.

Best Advice: Paint everything white.

Dream Sources: Rose Bowl Flea Market
