House-Tour-Button06.jpgWhen the couple that owns Scott's condo came by for a repair, the wife stood in awe and said "It has such good energy." This was exactly the kind of response Scott was aiming for when he whipped his boxy early 90's studio into shape last month...

In just 2 weeks, Scott turned a very banal space into one from which he would be happy to telecommute 40-50 hours per week. He wanted something that felt "warm and comfortable".

Upon entering Scott's apartment, I immediately felt rescued from the madness of Canal Street, just two blocks north. Mostly through the use of textiles and color, Scott has created something that feels like a cross between a tea-salon in Morocco and a tibetan-buddhist shrine. It almost has a sacred quality, evoking and even demanding calm.

A man who is not afraid to ship, Scott was able to bring back some weighty momento's from his time in India, his favorite of which is an armoire he found in Jodhpur. Instead of a couch, the armoire commands the space and invites visitors to the floor level, pillow laden 'chill space' directly in front of it.

After growing up in West Hempstead, Long Island and then living in NYC, Scott recently spent some time in southern California, South America and South East Asia. These were clearly transformative experiences for him, informing both his approach to life and his design aesthetic. It was clear to me that he was thinking in new ways and taking risks never before considered. One of those risks was to stop watching television, one was to stop drinking coffee, and another was to recognize that his home should feel like home before he started looking for a job.

I love to travel and have always thought the more you leave New York, the better you are equipped to live here. Scott is living proof.
